Ok, so the scooter has almost 500 miles on it. We've put 20 on it since we bought it and last night I gave it our first oil change.
Judging by the condition of the oil and the trash I found, I'd guess it was it's ONLY oil change. There's the plug, then the spring, then the screen. In the plug's little bowl I found some metal shavings and bits and pieces of what look to be gasket material.
Is my little treasure hunt result normal of first time Chinese scooter oil changes? I have no idea what gasket would have ended up in the oil, but luckily it was finally cleared out.

Certainly sounds like this is the first oil change the scooter ever got.

Your first 1-3 oil changes may show some small metal bits without having to be too worried. It's part of new engine wear in, and is why it is recommended to change the oil more often when breaking the engine in. If you strain your old oil through a coffee filter, you will likely find even more small shavings of metal.

Yea thats normal for the first go. Never happened to me changing engines or doing bbk's though, but others have reported otherwise. You should be fine. Sometimes the gaskets are imperfect and will have extra material than needed. In result the extra material gets inside. Also I've herd of metal shavings from the piston rings and cylinder breaking in. After the first oil change this should not occur again unless you have a problem.

Ever been to a dealer and told "Oh, that's normal"
for once, they 'might' be right

On a scooter I purchased from my brother in law, I changed the shortly after taking ownership. There was so much metal in the filter. I was sure the engine was toast. Changed the oil, drove a couple hundred miles, changed it again, it was clean.Although, I was extremely concerned, esp since the engine was so loud compared to mine.
Eventually, after a couple thousand miles, it stopped running. One of the bearings on the cam had broken and evidently the bearings ended up breaking into little pieces, which was what I had found in the filter.
The cam slipped timing and that's why it quit running. replaced the cam, checked the top end and found no evidence of damage, and we actually have never found any of the ball bearings. We've put about 1500 miles on it since then, and the oil is coming out clean now, and it runs like new. Going on 7500 miles. These things are a little finicky, require some extra care now and then, but sometimes they are surprisingly robust
