How many miles on this bike? the variator looks worked to me,,,needless to say i would give the crank shaft a serious look all the way around and i also would check for runout with the shaft as well

Third party observation what's with the galling on the bore of the variator,,,, that doesn't look good,,, is the shaft it sits on ok?

i think that Geh hit it,,,rubbed / chafed wires,,,grounded out and turned the scoot into a toaster,,,if the loom has unpluggable sections i wouldn't toss the bike just the bad parts,,,thats my call,,,but i'd be going over every section of the bike to make sure it doesn't happen again

I think chopperguy is on to it,,,the je ne sais quoi of riding,,,some people never get it,,,whether fear of crashing,,or being outside of a metal box to travel,,,"it's too hot,wet,cold,windy,,it'll mess up my hair",,,whatever reason to not ride,,,i kind of feel sorry for them as i wiz by on my stella ,,, they sit in traffic ,,,poor slobs

on broken studs below the level of the object it's threaded into you need to use a screw extractor,,,commonly called "easy outs",,,you drill a smaller hole in the end of the broken stud and tap in this tool that has like reverse threads so as you turn to loosen and remove the broken part the extractor bit is tightening and out she comes,,,if you can hang the bike up that would be great,,,have a helper stabilize it and you should be able to get it out,,,,either that or you need to remove the head,,
