Just got my hands on a 50cc scoot that I'm planning to frankenscoot out and first order of business is a 60cc piston/cylinder since the stock set has 18000km on it and is just baaaaarely able to keep itself running at idle for what I assume is lack of compression. Previous owner slapped a new carb, belt, rear tire, and oil in it not long before deciding it was beyond his skill and let me get it for $80 with the title. Unfortunately I'm stuck at work and the BBK came in JUST before I left the house.

Looks like where my scooter's carb bowl bleeder tube runs.

Where's the "currently not running, so silent as a churchmouse" option?

Does that nipple go into the belt housing area or toward the rear end gear housing? If it's going to the gears maybe it's just a spot to attach a collection hose when you swap the rear end gear oil. If not maybe supposed to go to the airbox like sailracer said.

Ease off the throttle? Nah, keep on it! Actually my money would be on a combination of OP reading the Km/Hr numbers since they're usually bigger, and the "optimistic" readings these scooters normally show.

If you're getting too much pressure in the crank case to the point you're blowing oil out of it then my guess would be a ring issue as well. Have you tried a compression test? Is the smoke coming from the tube foggy and white? If so it's probably air/fuel mixture blowing past the rings and pressurizing the bottom end.

Yeah, I'd definitely start with no carb on just to see if the problem is there or somewhere else. If you have some ether spra, brake cleaner, or starting fluid that would be a little more controlled method of dumping some fuel into the intake hole, but either way I'd figure that out while I'm waiting on the slowboat to deliver the missing bits.

Or just clip the kill switch wire, then if the wiring is capable of making spark it will. I had a scooter a couple years ago that even putting a paperclip in the connector for the kill switch wouldn't help but started when I cut the kill switch wire at the CDI. Eventually traced it to a chaffed wire for the key grounding out.

Has anyone done the numbers on these air scoops to see how much they aid cooling? Are they beneficial to any scoot or just ones with a bbk?

Hi all, Not sure if WTB posts are okay in here but I didn't see anywhere more suiting . I'm in need of a cylinder kit for my qmb139 50cc and while I'm seeing some sites selling the full kit for about $50 I was curious if anyone had a set they're willing to part with for less that's in serviceable shape. Anyone got a good scooter that's bottom-end grenades? Thanks!

Sorry if the poll bugged you, I meant it half in jest. Also, I didn't make a "My scooter won't start what do you think" thread. I had a strong suspicion of the problem and am just looking for anything I might have overlooked and/or comfirmation of my suspicions. I also did say in my first post that the valves were good, the carb is brand new, and though I didn't post it, I drained my fuel, carb bowl, and lines before refilling the scooter with fresh gas and there's a brand new and properly gapped NGK plug in the thing and I checked spark before posting. Sorry for not having mentioned it.

Speedo Puck

I've personally never heard of an analog motorcycle or scooter speedo that didn't air on the optimistic side by around 7-10%, not sure why it's not more accurately done, but even my buddie's Suzuki DR650 would show him as doing 110 when GPS said 100, so it's not strictly a chinascoot problem. I guess marking the speedo dial wrongly is cheaper than actually increasing performance? Who knows....

Thanks guys, never heard of the hollowed spark plug pressure thing before. I'll give that a go. I did get it up and running now with jumpers to a car battery to start it. Takes about 5-15 seconds to start with the throttle about 1/2 way held. Still won't start on it's own battery or kick, but once running it'll do the usual 30-37mph on a flat road. Of course then I had someone try to run into me when they ran a stopsign, I e-stopped, and the thing chugged out, making me have to roll the thing back the mile or so to the house. Guess that'll learn me not to ride too far from the house on scooters that can't be started without jumper cables.... Any suggestions on where to get a new cylinder and piston kit from? Found this kit from via craigslist looking for a potential parts scoot www.valleyscooterparts.com/cypirigawrpi.html and then called a local shop that wants 130 just for the parts kit. Pretty wide spread there!

Been tinkering with it some more. If I hold it WOT with the air cleaner box on it and hold the starter for about 10sec the engine will fire up and run fairly normal, but seems to idle out easily and warming the engine up doesn't seem to help it start any more quickly. Still thinking it's something in the top end or rings losing compression, but would welcome any advice.
Anyone? Bueller?
