OK. So I have a taotao 150. Has just over 500 miles. New last year, so not just sitting around. Driving around the neighborhood, everything is going fine. Pull up to a stop sign and it dies. Won't start. Check gas, has gas. Turns over. Won't start.
Where should I start first to start eliminating problems?
Thanks in advance.

Pull the plug, put the lead back on it and ground the plug on the valve cover. Hit the start button and check for spark. If you have spark check your valve gaps. They should be around .004 inches on the intake valve and .005 inches on the exhaust valve. Dying at stop signs and hard starting is a clue that the valves need to be adjusted.

Ok. Update. Pull the air filter cover. Shot carb cleaner down the pipe. Tries to start and then dies.

Poured fuel down the intake. Runs then dies. Tried again. Starts. As I feather the throttle I can feel the engine start to die. Tried more gas down the intake. Got it to run for about 20 seconds feathering the throttle. Got it to rev up a little. Then died. Battery is dying now so it's on the charger.

Adjust the valves. Here is a how to video:
Don't need to pull the fan cover off. Just make sure to holes in the cam sprocket are lined up as shown in the video.

Yeah...I'm not buying into the valve adjustment theory. 500 miles on the engine and it needs a valve adjustment??? I think you're jumping over several smaller issues that could be the problem. It seems more like a fuel delivery problem and not something as major as a valve adjustment.

A valve adjustment isn't anything major. A lot of Chinese scooters come from the factory with the valves poorly set. They also require more frequent adjustment than their Japanese counterparts.

My scooter dealer toldme many are not 100% from the factory . Auto part stores have a valve feeler gauge that is bent on the end to fit in there . Since it has been sitting up drain the gas out of the tank and bowl on the carb and hit it with carb cleaner through the jets . Fill with gas from a trusted source without ethanol if you can . Gas with ethanol only hasa day shelf life according to www.epa.gov and absorbs water 20 times more than gas without it . It is common for the sparkplug boot to fall off so check it too

It seems more like a fuel delivery problem and not something as major as a valve adjustment. When I first got my two scooters , I felt the same . Its brand new blah blah.... If you really don't want to have problems . Listen to what is being suggested , we have all been there feeling just as you do . look at the posted video . When you get starting ,stalling , proformance , fluctuating idle problems . The valves cause those kind of problems . I hope you changed the chinese plug for the NGK plug , the standard is fine , the iridum will last the life of the scooter . If I got a crated scooter this is what I would do : replace the fuel and vacuume lines use screw type clamps . adjust the valves . change the oil , gear oil and spark plug . the above would be done before I put gas or the battery mirrors . You go to my scooter go to my scooter turn the key tap the starter switch and its running . If that is was you want go with the program . We are not breaking your balls we just have been there and done that . John

You pour gas in the intake, run for a while, stops. Ah.... I am not a mechanic, but it sounds like you are not getting gasoline thru the carb. I would stop with by pulling a hose to see that I am getting gasoline in and out of the tank, and it not that it will be a stuck float or clogged jet.

It seems more like a fuel delivery problem and not something as major as a valve adjustment. Did you ride it in the winter or put it away and for how long? If put away for months your carb is varnished up from the gas and the PILOT JET and PASSAGE and the tiny holes by the butterfly are clogged. So if you do not want to check and or adjust your valves FIRST, then you will have to at least take the carb off and clean out the PILOT JET, PASSAGE and make sure the tiny holes by the butterfly are cleared. Alleyoop Take the Pilot jet out and clean it out and make sure you can see daylight through it. Then With a Can of Carb Cleaner and the long thin straw they come with stick the straw into the hole WITHOUT the jet in and spray. And here is where spray should come out out of the tiny holes by the butterfly. Then do the same thing to the Main Jet:

Yup sounds like you sucked a piece of dirt up into a carb jet,,if you verified spark,,remove and clean out all jets in carb.Should be good to go then. Tom
