Hello, I'm hoping to get some ideas on a problem I'm having with my CF Moto 250: coolant leaking out of the head gasket at the front of the engine. I recently noticed metal shavings in the oil screen, so changed out the crank and when I got it running it leaked coolant. I took the head off and had it machined flat, thinking that was the issue. Put it all back together and when I was filling the coolant it was literally pouring out the head gasket area. While cold! Any thoughts would be much appreciated. I'm stumped.

Yes new gasket. Dumb question: what is the proper orientation? Didn't realize there's a top and a bottom.

most list top on gasket since you see the leak pull the head and look at leak area.

Not sure of the experience and mechanical knowledge of the person that installed the head, but many back yard 'mechanics' are not aware of the critical function of incrementally torquing the head in a criss cross fashion, to the required torque settings, and not below or above that spec. If each bolt is cinched tight, then move on to the next, the head will not sit flat, and could actually warp the head, or smash the gasket unevenly, and cause coolant and compression leaks.
I would also suspect there might be another issue, but without a direct inspection, no one knows remotely, or over the internet.

Yes, the head was checked for cracks when it was resurfaced. I'm waiting on a new head gasket before disassembling the engine. Definitely over-torqued the head previously, but w/resurfacing & new gasket I thought I'd be good. Certainly possible gasket was put in upside down (if that can happen) Thanks for all the ideas, will update when I have resolution.

I am at a loss here myself. Any possibility that crosses my mind has been stated already.

When I get it apart I'll check the trueness of the cylinder sleeve. If that's warped or cracked I suppose it could also be a candidate.

You said you resurfaced the head I'm betting the factory acorn nuts are bottoming out on the studs before your gasket is torque down. you might try putting one washer on each of the four studs then put your acorn nuts on and retorqueing your head. I had two brand new 250 scooters that had overheating problems right out of the crates in my shop and it took me forever to figure out the problem. the four studs were to long and the acorn nuts we're bottoming out before the gasket was smashed down sounds like the same problem your having. good luck hope this helps.

Feeling really dumb here! It seems I had a breach in the bottom of the O-ring gasket for the thermostat housing. It's new, so I of course didn't consider it. The crack was hard to see & at the very bottom. This is the nature of the hobby I guess... Thanks for all the help & ideas.
