I have a problem that I want to get a second opinion on. I have two good scooter batteries. I don't want one to go bad, so I'm wondering what is an exceptable storage life.
Long story short, I was having problems electrical starting. I first thought it was the battery and replaced the factory battery. That didn't solve the problem. Went through and replaced every electrical component and continued to have electrical starting problems. In the end, not a big deal, now I have electrical spares. In the end, it it was a stupid mistake of not reconnecting the valve cover ground after checking the valve lashes.. DUH!!!
Now I have an extra good factory battery. I wondering if I should just save it and occasionally trickle charge it, or swap batteries monthly to use both.

trickle charge should do the trick, they can last years on trickle charge, just like if they where being used on the scoot daily; or you can daisy chain the spare battery and add electrinic extras like fog lights, phone charger, radio, and the likes and not worry about running out of juice.

A trickle charge should be decent for about six months to a year---
Depending on local weather conditions and battery manufacturing----
Excessive heat or cold will indeed shorten the lifespan no matter what.
It's kind of a shot in the dark either way.
May I suggest a simple battery swap every month or so..... That should secure max life for both....
Just my Humble opinion, I am No expert but, leaving one sitting for an extended amount of time may not be the best idea.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Btb, I always plug mine into the Battery Tender Jr when not driving. This includes the almost two years I was out from workman's comp, and only started Peej to idle. Every spring tune-up, the battery's tested fine and strong still.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I like the idea of having two batteries. It's just finding a mounting spot for the second one.

The scoot on your avatar is the same body style as mine, you can fit two batteries under the floor without issues, you just have to cut the battery compartment and fabricate a bracket to hold both batteries.

I would just keep the second one on a maintainer.

Oh, sure, Jar', get sensible on us, spoil our extravagance here. Hey joey, don't listen to Jar'. He's being a fuddy. You KNOW you want more lights. And horns. Like ricardo said, you can never have too many horns. (warning, going to get naughty here) Or would that be you can never get too horny? >'Kat

I'm also thinking about installing some ground effect Colored LED lights. Since my drive to work is at midnight, some extra visibility wouldn't help. I would put them on a toggle switch so during the day they won't run.

swapping the batteries would be a good idea. putting one of them on a trickle charge (less than 2 amps) would be okay too.
things to not do: don't ever charge at more than 2 amps. don't remove the battery before it is fully charged. don't let a battery go completely dead.

if it is not too much trouble a second battery on board is a great idea,,,but a battery tender will keep it good for a very long time
