So I decided to change my own oil about 2 weeks ago and it seemed like a fairly straight forward process, but now I am hearing a really strange noise coming from my scoot. It starts as a really high pitched whine or whistle like a jet engine in the distance when I accelerate about about 35 MPH and then when I let off the throttle it turns into a really loud whirring/grinding noise that doesn't stop until I come to a complete stop. I thought I did everything right with the oil change but the noise seemed to start about a day after so that is probably causing the problem. I put in Lucas oil high performance motorcycle 4 stroke 10W-30. As far as I can tell that is what my owners manual called for.
Could someone tell me what they think is the problem? If it sounds like a major problem then I will take it in to a shop but I don't really have the money to just take it in for them to check out. Thanks guys!

In your case re-check the oil level, and if the oil level is good, then a Video of the noise would help to determine where the noise is coming from. And when doing the Video put it close to the Valve cover, the Variator and the Clutch to determine if maybe the problem is in the CVT and not the motor. Alleyoop

I re-checked the oil level and it is fine. The sound seems to be coming from the left side. I hear it louder when there is a curb on my left or bushes and things to reflect the noise but not on the right. I will try to get a video uploaded soon so you can hear the actual noise but I am 99% sure that it is coming from the left.

Good then it is something in the CVT and not the motor. You may want to take the CVT cover off and take a picture or Video, It could be something came loose maybe some part from the kickstarter is banging around in there. Alleyoop

Definitely do as Alleyoop recommended.
Sounds like SOMETHING is amiss in the belt/CVT area. It may well be VERY simple. With the cover removed, and the engine running, it should be noticeable.
With my old Xyngyue 150, I experienced a similar phenomenon... Turned out the gasket behind the CVT cover was torn from the factory, and a big piece worked its way onto the variator, contacting spinning parts. So... when the rear wheel was in motion, the "jet engine" sound was there on the right side.
Your GEARBOX final drive could also be low on lube. Dry gears can make a similar sound too. New scooters may arrive without the gear-case being filled correctly. That's easy to check.
Ride safe,
Leo in Texas

Ok guys here is video of inside my CVT. I don't hear the noise with the cover off but it usually only kicks in at around 25-30 mph so I probably just didn't have it revved high enough. It was starting to gyrate on me so I let off. the two posts that stick out of the middle (one is where the kick-start pedal connects and the other is to the left) both seem a little wiggly. There is also tons of grease and rubber debris from what I am assuming is my belt that blew abt. 800 miles ago and was replaced. I tried brushing out the cover but it is going to take some serious work to get the rest out of the other side. Let me know if this is helpful or not. Thanks guys.

It sounds like the weights in the variator could be bad, or in worst case it could be the crank...

So last night the scooter quit on me. The back tire locked up. I borrowed a truck and hauled it to the shop this morning and they say it is pretty much totaled. Not really sure what to do now... RIP scootie.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea of what a good asking price would be for it as is. Everything else works just fine. It "just" needs a new transmission so maybe it is worth something to someone. I want to try and salvage as much as I can from this horrible situation.

Take a stroll to the tech Library and find out how it's a "not so complicated" job to do.

If I could find the parts and had the tools and time I would try but I probably wouldn't even know how to tell what is broken and if I fixed it. If it is a quick little thing I wonder why the guy says it will cost $700-$1000 to fix.

just borrow an impact wrench for the price of a beer or two and fit a new transmission yourself in about 10 minutes.

700 to 1000 beans ! Lol I recently changed my trans bearings and it costs around $30 . It can also just be the clutch bearings locked up . To find out you'll need to tacke the clutch assembly off and then see if the wheel spins . But more then likely if the back wheel locked up it's the trans bearings . They are very easy to change . Problem is you may have blew out the variator guide slides also . And the belt is probably wore out again also . But all together your still looking at $80 or so . If you need help , we can get u through it .

When u say it needs a new transmission , these scoots don't have a real "transmission " , it is a gear box , just has about 6 bearings and a few gears " and the gearbox is part of the engine case . So it just a process of taking the cvt apart , removing the cover to expose the bearings and replacing them .
