How do you hold the clutch to get the big clutch nut (inner one) to the right torque before you reinstall it on a scooter?

I think you need an impact wrench/gun for that

How do you hold the clutch to get the big clutch nut (inner one) to the right torque before you reinstall it on a scooter? if you're talking about this nut: set it on the floor and sit in a chair, using your feet to compress the spring then you can easily put the nut back on and tighten. i use an adjustable wrench to tighten and loosen like in the first vid instead of a vise.

An electric impact and all the right sockets is a must tool for a Chinese scooter owner.

I use a homemde variator tool to hold the variator and or clutch so I can loosen the nut to get it off. The tool is easy to make, nothing special. I used aluminum bar stock and cut to length and then I drilled the holes and used screws and nuts to set it up. other people have used steel bar stock too. You do need to use decent sockets for the nuts and a long breaker bar to get the nuts loose. Sometimes they use some epoxy glue to ensure the nuts don't come loose so you need to chisel off the glue, if it is on the nuts. it does take effort to get the nut loose the first time as the factory tends to put them on really tight, too tight in my opinion.

There is a chap who insists that using an impact wrench does no harm however the guys who have partially stripped crank and drive shaft ends from his work won't agree anymore. The last bike I saw damaged was Piaggio powered and it cost almost $1,000 to recover from a moments inattentiveness with an impact wrench. They were trying to save money on alternative belts and were going through a number of them and eventually messed the threads up on the crank so badly that the variator came loose and destroyed the splines on the crank shaft and itself. Destroyed a crank that should have lasted up to 100,000 miles and a variator that should have lasted 36,000 to 50,000 miles.

Anymore and you risk over torquing it. I have removed and replace my variator dozens of times with my Harbor Freight 12v impact wrench, and not a single issue!

As long as you use a tourque limiter and check the movement of the assembly to prevent transferance to other components to get the job done correctly. As soon as you start going over tourque you start to feather and compromise the threads and integrity of the shafts. You can also cause stress to the crank pin, rod bearing, con rod and piston if its the variator shaft and weaken or crack a tooth on a gear if a clutch shaft or wheel nut the impact wrench was used inappropriately on. Many do not know how to safely use an impact wrench on engines and gearboxes so they end up doing a lot of damage and never figure out that their problem later on was self inflicted.
