San Diego County is getting away from the ground loops and switching to high mounted cameras. They work great

I wish we had photo diodes ( motion detectors ) instead of weight sensors at traffic lights . We have turned a short train track into a bike and walk path in town . Since so many bikes pull out in front of cars I kept on insisting that the existing RR lights should have a sensor or a manual switch to alert cars BEFORE they would cross the street . The RR red lights were taken down but after me griping the county put up amber flashing lights but they stay on all the time instead of as needed like I suggested

In my small town, we have like 6 stop lights, the police tell us, count to ten, wait for no cars, then proceed. We run the lights if there isnt any traffic! Lol!

There are multiple methods used in traffic light control, no one method will work every time.
I too live in a small town and traffic lights rarely change. Most of the time I just make sure road is clear and then go. Sine our roads are not well lit, it's easy to see a car coming at night. During the day, it's better to wait a reasonable length of time as there will be a car along shortly to trip the lights. Since we are a tourist town, riding in packs is the only safe way to travel and they usually have enough mass to trip the lights.

One of the first things I did when I got My scooter was to put the magnet I bought from the scooter store . It is on the lowest part of the frame and it work real good no problem at lights. And we do have the red light law where if you have a light that does not change you wait three times and if safe go. The magnet is about 1/8 inch thick by 1 inch by2 1/2 inch long has very strong glow to permanently glow it on frame.

I've a question for those using magnets. Did you try the intersections without magnets, then with, then without again? Was there a difference in wait time each try?

My kids and I own Fatkat Computers and what has work so far is i pulled the magnets from apx 6 hard drives and use zip ties to secure them so far after 2 years they seem to work very good. One issue i have they will pick up every nut, nail and other metal Scrap off the road plus where i live in Middlefield Ohio lets put it this way it's not the dirt that gives me a border line reading it's the Midwifed mud that makes it a pain to clean because where I'm at Middlefield has the 4th largest group of Amish families living here and their horses are not house broken. on a hot day you can't mist the smell..

I am provided non-slip shoe covers from work, the comment above about someone using a magnet in the boot gives me an idea... I could sandwich RE/Neodymium magnets between two layers of these rubber shoe covers. Just a thought, but I think I'll just run the lights when there aren't any cars around to trigger them..

The rest of the world uses bun bags when riding on paved roads where you can be fined for not cleaning up after your horse: www.bunbag.com/

Not here in Middlefield they tried the horse dippers idea did not work out the bishop would not aloud it. One thing we do get is new roads a lot quicker then other cities . For your info a Amish man complain because the horse hit a chuck hole on a back road and wanted the city to pay for it to the tune of $2500.00 for the value of the horse and the cost to have it shot road right there on the spot .I don't know what they did with the horse.

I think someone lives near a group of Amish that appreciate the value of money, and have figured out how to work the system....
