Hi everyone,
I have a friend whose Piaggio Fly 2007 50cc is not idling correctly. The engine will die when idling. He says the last time he rode it was in August 2013, and has not ridden it since. It has about 8,000 miles on it.
When he tries to accelerate, the scooter will die on him. We are thinking of draining the old gas, putting new gas in it, cleaning the carb, and replacing fuel lines. Also, should I try to adjust the idle screw? I've never adjusted the idle screw, so any help would be appreciated. Should I turn the screw clockwise or counterclockwise?
Thanks SO MUCH!

the first thing i would do after the new gas is the idle screw. it is easily adjusted by slowly turning it clockwise to raise the rpm, it is located on the top right of the carb, there is also a fuel mixture screw but it can be a little more complicated.. i would also check to make sure there's no cracks in any of the air intake hoses or the intake manifold.

Question is it a 2 Stoke or 4 stroke, big difference on the carbs. Alleyoop

2 or 4 strokes. When cleaning the carb pay good attention to the idle jet and main jet. Look over the air filter. Blow it out if its a cone and wash out or replace if its a foam.

A CV Carb the Pilot jet passage and the tiny fuel outlets sitting that long may be varnished up so just cleaning the jets is not good enough. That is why the question is it a 2T or 4T so I can put up pictures and show what has to be cleared not just the jets. Alleyoop

Drain the tank and bowl in the carb . Any carb cleaner spray should remove any film if it has some . Remove the jets and I like to use a stiff solid strand of wire to poke through after spraying with cleaner . Does it idle high at first then slow down after warming up ? The stock jets are small and easy to get dirt or residue in them which clogs them up . Inspect the airfilter . Clean and gap or replace the sparkplug can often do wonders .
Have the valves ever been adjusted ? All 4T will need it done as if the get too tight ( not opening up enough ) make it stall or not even start up .

Does it get better once it's warmed? If so, then it probably is old gas. My Piggy did the same last spring after sitting the winter (and will probably do it this spring, I'm betting). First try to accelerate and he wanted to die. I let him sit and idle for a bit and then he went fine.
I'm not sure my mech did anything more than just drain and replace the old gas, along with the oil change and spring tune-up.
I'd suggest draining the old gas, then see if does okay with fresh. If so, hallelujah and that's all you need to do! Least amount of work involved! If not, then start digging in deeper like these smart mechanicky guys say.

Oh, and alley, it is a 4-stroke. I don't think any of the Piaggios are 2s. But the Fly I know is a 4. Oh wag! I knew something!! >'Kat

If your going to clean out the carb take the Fuel Bowl off and unscrew the Pilot Jet and Main Jet and clean those out, Make sure you can see Daylight through them Especially the PILOT JET the Main Jet is pretty good size. Then with the JETS out I use a Spray Can of Carb Cleaner and they come with a long thin straw I stick the straw in the PILOT jet passage and Spray. The Spray should come out of the TINY OUTLETS by the Butterfly. Then Spray into the MAIN jets passage and the spray should come out by the needle and needle guide.

Guys! It worked! I cleaned out the carburetor and the Jets and sprayed the inside of the carburetor, careful not to spray the gasket, and drained out the old gas and put new gas in it and it works like a charm. It's not cutting off at Idle anymore :-) thank you so much
