Hello!
I have a Tank 250 touring scooter with the watercooled GY6 style 250 motor. Now I know that the speedometers on these are never right but usually they can ballpark your speed. The problem I am having is that my speedometer hangs instead of falling so every time I accelerate it adds my speed to the previous speed registered. I've looked all over the place but I can't find any information on repairing or replacing the speedometer cables (or sensor?) on these scooters. Anyone come up with a rememdy for this? Also I was going to mount my gps but all the mounts attach to the handlebar which as you all know is not exposed on scooters. Has anyone come up with a good way to mount a gps or Iphone to their scooter?

Also I was going to mount my gps but all the mounts attach to the handlebar which as you all know is not exposed on scooters. Has anyone come up with a good way to mount a gps or Iphone to their scooter? Had the same problem with a Scooter. It is not the cable that causes this..it is the speedometer itself. They are magnetically dampened so the needle returns to zero slowly..vice just dropping quickly. When they go bad the 'hair spring' that returns them to zero is too weak to do so and the needle hangs in place. New cable did not fix the issue..I had to replace the Speedo and all was back to normal. Here is a tip.. ride and watch your odometer..it will continue to log on miles which tells you the cable itself is ok and that the problem lies in the speedo itself. Ax for mounting a GPS..many drill screw holes in the dash panel to install them 'cause like you say the handlebars are covered by body plastics. Myself..I modded a GPS holder so it mounted on the shaft of my mirror. While not as steady and vibration makes it hard to see..if I place one finger on the GPS for a second..it stabilizes it so I can read it.. Hope this helps But I would give a 99% chance the speedo is bad..verify the cable as I mentioned..by watching the odometer. If it logs on miles the cable is working. BUT..the tell tale 'bad speedo' sign is that it hangs up..and sometimes will even swing back and forth as you ride.. Glenn

I just used the Arkon handlebar mount on the left mirrir stem with a piece of fuel line that I split placed over a mirror stem to make up the difference and allow it to clamp on.
Yes it does sound like the speedometer itself is hanging up inside.

I am new to the forum and about to buy a 2006 Tank 250cc tomorrow with a speedometer issue. I just wanted to post a thank you to carasdad for the bit about the Speedo. I was all ready to get a cable but I will now watch the odometer when I take the test ride. Now I know exactly what to look for and what to replace. Thanks!

If you're still looking for an option to mount your gps check out ram mounts. I mounted my gps with one of there kits that attached to the brake reservoir. Not the cheapest option out there, I think all the parts cost me about $50 but its pretty solid and very adjustable.

Just get the bracket for the GPS or whatever and mount it right on top of the instrument panel behind the windshield. Alleyoop
