Hi everyone,
I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to scooters, so please take that into consideration because I have little to no knowledge about this stuff.
I just bought a secondhand 2004 Meitian scooter to get to school.
The kickstarter was working all of yesterday and I rode the thing a couple blocks. Today I was trying to start the scoot and the electric wasn't working so I tried the kickstarter a couple times. Now it seems jammed and stuck in the UP position. I decided to leave as is for now.
I got the electric working, but when the engine turns and starts, it makes a high-pitched screeching sound. Is that because the kickstarter is stuck in that position? Is there a problem trying to start the engine electrically and with the kickstarter stuck?
Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Yes most likely that is what is making the racket. So take the CVT cover off and if you don't know what to do to get the kickstarter fixed TAKE A PICTURE of the CVT and we will help you get it fixed up. Alleyoop

If its a 4 stroke your kickstarter will look something like this and most likely the gears are out of alignment and touching and making the racket: Alleyoop

Thanks so much, alleyoop!
I'm waiting on tools to open the CVT... but do you think it's more likely that it's just misaligned or do you think I'll need all new parts?

The Spring on the shaft on the right half moon gear maybe came out of its slot, lets hope a piece of the case did not break that holds the spring with tension.
The kickstarters are pretty weak on the scoots and are only supposed to be used in emergencies if your electric start doesn't work after you go someplace and park it then come out and find out your battery is dead. Alleyoop

These kick starts arent designed to be the primary mode of starting your scooter all the time. Get the electrical s fixed.

Just make sure that you take the lever off before you remove the CVT cover. The locking bolt/pin needs to be completely removed in order to do this. A good many problems are caused because folks leave the lever on and yank all the parts of the kickstart out when removing the cover damaging the variator drive faces in the bargain and of course losing any orientation of where the parts originally were.
It will be similar although not absolutely the same as what Allyoop posted as there are some variations.
I believe ScooterTronics was a Meitian dealer.

I was surprised to see how wimpy a scooter kick start after being used to having motorcycles that I had to '" man kick " em to start . I had a Honda XR 350 do a compression kick back and it flipped me over off of the bike .
I use my left foot and push down easy until I feel its on a compression stroke then let it come back up and then push down with a lil more effort .
You do know that the brake lever must be pulled in for the electric start to engage right ? If the brake light switch goes bad ( its located by each lever ) it will not start . Turn the key or some it may need to be running and test both levers to see if the brake light works . You can use ether one to start it . Some scooters have a killswitch in the kickstand to prevent it from rolling while having the kick stand down

Thanks all for the kind feedback. I appreciate no one biting off my head for asking eye-rollingly simple questions!
Luckily the mechanic who sold me the scoot is willing to come help me fix it. I'm going to print out the photo Alleyoop posted for reference.
And definitely keep in mind all of the stuff y'all have said about how to treat a kickstarter from now on!

Just FYI- On my scooter, the kickstart mechanism is attached to the CVT cover, so I don't have to remove the lever before removing the CVT cover. Others it is attached within the CVT, and requires the lever to be removed.

Most kickstarters aren't going to fall apart in two kicks either. I used mine nearly every day for a whole riding season.

I cures the kick starters in these bikes.... They are always a pain, when putting the CVT cover back on... One of our project bikes just doesn't have one anymore, because we are constantly modding it. And the springs.... well they just suck....
