The weather's been so nice the last couple of days I've been taking the new (to me) scoot into work. On my way back while I was still downtown, a woman pulls up next to me and starts yelling about how "I don't deserve the right to be driving in the center the lane" and other colorful opinions.
Now, I don't deny that I'm not technically supposed to riding the scooter. It was never titled when it was bought by the guy who gave it to me, so getting it titled and plated over to me requires a few weeks of waiting on the new title. So, sure. I'm not supposed to ride it because it's a 150cc. But, I'm a licensed driver with a motorcycle endorsement and I carry insurance. I wasn't too worried about taking it out once or twice while I wait for the BMV to send me the registration.
I think she was just angry because she thought it was a sub 50cc, since it wasn't plated. What I don't get, is why she's that upset in downtown. Getting up to even 25mph is pretty optimistic during rush hour. Even if the scooter was a 50, it wouldn't be slowing anyone down.
I'm guilty myself of thinking "geez, get off the road" when I see a 50cc DUI special on a road with a 55 MPH + limit, but why care on little local streets if someone is on a scooter? It's not like they can't keep up with traffic. I think that's the only time I can recall someone being unpleasant just because I was on 2 wheels in the dozen years I've been riding. Some people must just be miserable all the time.

My only concern is a jock, prep, or yuppie instigating trouble with me by showing off for some little teenie-bopper. He'll learn the hard way.

Any motor vehicle is entitled to a whole lane. Those who think different will one day get frisky with the wrong rider, and get a reality-check. Try invading the "personal space" of some outlaw bikers, and you will live (maybe) to regret it... LOL!

You pay the same fees and taxes that she does, (or at least will be). So you have the same rights to the road as everyone else. As long as you're not impeding regular traffic she's got nothing.
Some people ARE just miserable all the time. There's a grade school boy waiting for the bus along my morning route that regularly greets me with rude gestures as I pass by. Nice to see he was brought up with such good manners. I just smile and wave.
Whatever their deal might be, just give them a wide berth. They might be right, they might be wrong, or they might be plain crazy, but you can't change the laws of physics. Best to be elsewhere when someone decides that road rage is a viable option.

You should try riding around town during bike week. We have it here twice a year. I gets laughs, cat calls and bad language. I just smile and pop off a little Beep Beep with my horn and keep scooting. Sometimes I get people that can't stand being behind a scooter and even though I'm doing the speed limit want to pass me and honk. People here don't respect scooters because we at least 15 scooter reantal places on a 13 mile stretch of road. They think everyone is a renter. I just keep on smiling, waving and giving a little beep beep.

I love it when I run into someone being a loudmouth. I just wait for that green light and with one twist of the throttle they disappear into a pinpoint.

Wow, I am curious to know that woman's, "other colorful opinions." Really rude, and you have got to have balls to call out any stranger with or without a valid reason. Sure, I would be like "what the f..?" and be seriously tempted to say or do
something, but like with anyone you meet, you never know who this person is or what they are capable of doing.
A woman with that kind of balls, tells me she may be a person of authority. School teacher? Cop? She may just have had a previous incident(s) with a scooter. Maybe she's just a B, and can't help being one. People who have a mouth usually get backlash and learn the hard way, but even a woman with balls is still a woman. It's best to just turn the cheek, feel sorry for them, then forget about it. People like that don't think before they speak or do things, they are looking for trouble, and you want to avoid those types.

Just remember that much of the country is in a state of outrage over the incident that happened this past week in New York where a bunch of bikers riding just about every imaginable type of power sports vehicle from ATVs to Sport Bikes to Scooters harassed the driver of an SUV hemming him in, stopping him and then tried to open his door and gain access to his vehicle prompting him to drive off accidentally running over one of the outlaw bikers in the process. They beat and kicked him near to death on the second assault trying to also assault his wife and 2 year old daughter.
The outlaws caused over 200 911 calls to be made over 50 bikes were impounded with over 60 traffic citations issued along with 15 arrests.
I live and work in Florida and I am hearing flack about this locally in break-rooms along with other public places with the common comments being to just play it safe and run over any biker who crowds you or passes and brake checks you backing over them afterward to ensure you've done a good job.
Now is probably the worst of all times to press a confrontation with someone driving an enclosed vehicle.
I made the mistake of driving the posted 20 mph where there was construction taking place and got similar from a woman in a large SUV. And I ride a fully registered Aprilia capable of speeds approaching 100 mph wearing full gear including a full face helmet, carbon fiber armored gloved and heavy riding boots.
