Hi all.
I've got a 2012 gy6 50cc 4 stroke scooter which has ran great for the last year.
It has had the oil changed twice in the 1500 miles it has clocked up.
Now the problem.....
It was running great without any signs of problems when I put it away overnight, the next morning I went to ride it and it was terrible! Totally hesitating and a horrible metallic rattle/sound coming from the engine area somewhere!!
I've checked the compression and that is fine at 170psi and I've also had the carb off and cleaned that out with an compressed airline.
But yet it is still not running right and sound terrible!
What area should I be looming at next an what could it possibly be??

Check the variator...750 miles per oil change is pushing it a bit. i would have changed it at least 4 times in 1500 miles myself.

crossin fingers it's in the variator or belt cause that's an easy, cheap fix. Has the bike been on it's side for any reason? I've seen them have the timing chain slip off the guide shoes, but that's really, really rare... almost to being freakish but it was after the bike had been dumped.

Thanks for the replies.
The bike has always been upright. I only do short 4 mile trips to work and that's all the bike is used for. Also it is never really at full throttle for long as I travel directly through a built up town.
I plan to remove the variator and clutch tomoz just to see if anything is loose or worn.
Fingers crossed its something simple and cheap!!
Still can't figure out why it was running 100% fine before I put it away and then the very next morning it's terrible!

check all parts under the kick start cover if you use the kick start a lot. things happen. give it a good look over.

Roller weights in the variator can rattle and sound like a bad bearing when they get worn down . A buddy of mine had two of em fall out of the variator that made a lot of noise and performance was hurt . Does it make the noise at idle or while riding ? I have gotten bad gas twice in my 2T when I was too far away from my trusted sources . It ran great going home but the next day it would not start at . I drained the tank and carb bowl , filled with good gas and tada it was new again . Have the valves ever been adjusted yet ? All 4Ts will need this done with some needing it out of the crate . Valves out of spec could make a ticking sound

I've just had the cvt cover off and took the variatir and clutch off and found nothing unusual or loose. Lots of black belt dust but that's it...
The bike is still very hesitant and still has the noisy rattle which only happens under load and it sound like its coming from behind/ inside the cvt area!!
What would be the next best coarse of action?
Could it be piston slap even if the compression is still good?

I also adjusted the valves when I first got it and they are both at 0.03 and they are still fine.

I'm still struggling with this issue guys!
The bike will start and idle no bother at all. It will even ride but very very hesitant and a knocking/rattling noise is still happening.
I can't isolate where the noise is actually coming from so it's hard to know where to start!
As I've said in previous posts,I've taken then cvt cover off and taken the variator off and also taken the clutch assembly off,both of which seem ok. I've rode the bike without the cvt cover on and the noise is still there,so I can eliminate the kick start!
What's gonna be the next best thing to look at/strip out?
Top end such as block and piston or bottom end such as gearing and crank?
Is there anyway of knowing or checking the transmission behind the cvt?
ALSO.. A point to note is that I've never changed the transmission fluid from when I first got the scoot so could it be something to do with that??
Any help is much appreciated guys as I'm stuck without you all.
Bike has been off the road for 6 weeks now and I really need to get it sorted or scrapped.

Check the Tranny Oil open the drain plug and see if it has oil it is a splash system so it only holds a few ozs of oil.
But if it happens only under load it may be running LEAN now that the Temps have dropped and you would need to adjust for it and richen up the carb mixture. Turn the Fuel Ratio Mixture Counter Clockwise give it 1 full turn and see if that helps.

I'll check tranny oil tomoz. I've played with the mixture setting on the carb for days but still no good. :-(

If it has been running lean and it has caused damage somewhere,where shouldI be looking for the tell tale signs? Spark plug? Piston? Valves?

Re-check the valves when you adjusted them you might not have tighten the lock nut enough and one or both came loose and the Rockers are making noise but that sound is usually CLATTER CLATTER. The other thing maybe the Cam Chain tensioner is not putting pressure on the chain and that makes a rattling sound slapping around hitting the chain guide. But try and pinpoint it as you ride it if it is coming from the rear or front(which would be the motor).
Did you actually check the rollers, if they have flat spots that would rattle really good. The only other thing would be if the tranny has no oil the gears would make a metal to metal sound. Also if your CVT has a BENDIX for electric starting if the CVT cover was not put on right and the bendix is NOT in the CVT INSIDE cover slot the BENDIX would be rattling against the Variator Fan teeth.

Also forgot to mention that when I was checking the vacuum I noticed that the spacer/gasket under the vacuum intake pipe (thick hard plastic with a rubber o ring) had cracked in half and that some of the hard plastic was missing, only small fragments but thats probably fell into the block!
Would that cause any of the issues I've described.
I did put another spacer/gasket on,but it was an old one I had and the o ring wasn't in perfect condition!

Checked valves and they are fine.
Checked rollers and variator and they are fine.
Checked clutch and that is fine.
Can't see it being the bendix as it was wasn't doing it before. Only removed cvt cover to check for noise.
