You cannot go by the lighting of anything on a scoot to determine what your CDI is AC OR DC. Take mine for instants, I have an AC CDI and EVERYTHING COMES ON when I turn the KEY TO ON. I can even put my HEADLIGHTS on just with the KEY ON. My Trike the Battery Feeds Everything and the STATOR Just feeds the R/R to charge my battery. Alleyoop

Cool, it only takes 1 minute, just suppose someone buys a used scoot and the previous owner pulled the killwire off the CDI. If the guy wasn't sharp he would probably think he had a DC cdi. On the forums I have seen guys get the wrong CDI when it is so easy to make sure what is on there, but many do not know how to test to make sure. Alleyoop

It originally started fine after the bbk install with the crappy battery that came with it, but for some reason today it struggled and wouldn't start, so i thought maybe the crap battery was failing, even struggled after charging

Then why are you thinking stronger starter and or CDI, If that is the case you have something else going on. Have you tested your battery while cranking? It could just be a weak battery it may have a bad cell and they will read good standing there but put a load on them and the voltage drops like a rock. Or a starter going south drawing a lot of juice. Alleyoop

Some other things to check that may be putting a load on the motor for starting are: 1. Bad Wire connections 2. Frayed wires 3. Bad grounds 4. Rear wheel binding(brakes), Clutch, idling to high that the rear wheel spins. 5. Bearings on the crank. Alleyoop

Often the Chinese MC/mopeds original battery cables copper core are often ridiculously thin and can not transfer enough power. It's only the plastic around the cable which is a little thicker. I changed my cables to better ones and that cured my starting problems.

It almost seems like the battery isn't taking a charge, i put it on the charger a trickle charger for six hours still struggled to start, started once then wouldn't restart it the second attempt. It wouldn't even turn over

Millsc your loosing it man, are you ok? You can build a motor but cannot test some simple things, don't let your volt meter get covered up in dust alleyoop

electrical stuff isn't my strong point i'm an engine guy i checked everything and voltages everything seems good it just wont push past the compression stroke, i can turn the flywheel back and give it a head start to the compression stroke and it fires right up, cdi it is

Provided the battery is good then the Advancing, Retarded CDI for starting will hopefully do the trick for you. Good luck, and when you get it let us know GO or STILL NO GO. Alleyoop

Millsc, Just get your multi Meter connect it to the battery and take a reading WITHOUT STARTING THE MOTOR. It should read about 12.5 12.7, then start the motor and watch the meter if it drops dramatically the battery probably has a bad cell, then rev it up some and see if the reading goes up if it goes up to around 13+ it is charging. John, ally,
I wounder if this CDI (the AC unit john has) would work well with just a stock 50-QMB? I myself have tried the orange Performance cdi and it worked, but simply killed my mid-top end Performance. Have you tried it with a 139qmb-50 that was stock?
