I have been riding with just regular cloths and shoes nothing else when I get to around 45 the blacktop starts to look awful hard. Was talking to a friend yesterday and he told me I at least should wear a helmet on my rides one which is approx 20 miles and mhe told me he lost his brother to a motorcycle accident a couple years ago and also a ,cousin in the same year both not wearing helmets and would both have been alive if they had one hit a telephone pole with his head and the other flew threw the windshild and hit the steering wheel of the car the wrecks killed both of them It sure got me thinking so last nite I ordered a new helmet and some good gloves  |

I have to wear a helmet when my 150cc arrives, but wore my helmet with face shield with my 50ccs not gonna get hit and killed or eat bugs  |

At the very least wear a helmet. I have a brother in law that went down after getting hit in a parking lot. He was not even moving. Even with the lid he hit just right and ended with a brain stem injury that has left he unable to do the basic tasks of life.
After the helmet all ill say is flesh makes a crappy brake pad......

Welcome to personal responsibility and enlightenment. A good hat and gloves should be mandatory. Besides the ovbious hazards of large insects and flying debris, it doesn't take much of a tumble to bash your head --> itistheride.boards.net/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=general&thread=3716&post=42048And if you're like most of us and work with your hands, you should make some effort to protect them. Mess up your hands and you can't work. No worky, no paycheck! The rest depends on traffic conditions and your local environment. A decent motorcycle jacket will have padded armor to protect your elbows, shoulders, and back from the initial impact with the ground as well as abrasion resistant material to lessen road rash. Some sort of sturdy footwear that covers your ankles, (they're kind of important), and that are well secured to your feet so that they don't abandon you at an inopportune moment and leave your toesies to fend for them selves against the pavement. Pants are a more subjective topic. I know scooterers can be a wild a crazy bunch, but please wear something. |

[replyingto=devo344a]devo344a[/replyingto]recently i crashed my scooter landing on grass at 40 mph. i was wearing a helmet and gloves... i walked away with no injuries... or so i thought. the following day i was in so much pain i didn't go back to work for a whole week. i hate to think how much worse it would have been had i hit the pavement. a protective jacket is next on my list of necessary equipment. your muscles may still take some time to heal but at least you won't suffer the pain of road rash. |

Protective jackets can often be found for great prices second hand on craigslist guys. Trust me they make a HUGE difference

It's always good to dress right when your riding . A helmet , gloves , thick denim or leather jacket and thick denim or leather pants . Not thin jeans but thick denim like you get at a tractor supply store will do . I always rode with a insulated denim overalls when I rode back in the states . Here I use a leather jacket I bought at a consignment shop for 10€ lol that and helmet and gloves . You think on a scooter you might look foolish but I have been down before at speeds less than 40mph before and the road rash is just as painful as over 40mph.

Definitely go with some rugged lace-up steel-toe boots in addition to the helmet. About three weeks ago, I took a low-speed spill on dirt and was fine, except for my foot which got mashed under the scooter. Ended up with some sprain/bruising that is still a bit uncomfortable. I definitely am wearing boots on every outing now...
And gloves are good as well... I have some cheap riding gloves with the rubber 'armor' on the knuckles; a good-sized grasshoper or bumblebee at speed will definitely sting when it hits bare knuckles...

As far as I know, "protection" basically reduces the speed of injuries by about 20 mph. Meaning that your risk of injuries at 45 mph wearing gear is the same as the risk of injuries at 25 mph without gear. Which is why 65 mph on the highway starts looking awful hard even with the gear. |

Really? Try skidding down the road with armor on as opposed to wearing nothing (at any speed) and see what happens. They don't call riders in a T-shirt and shorts "Squid" for nothing.

Yea it seems like the right thing to do If ya want to be safe The longest ride ive been doing is 20miles each way 2to3 times a month and its a 2 lane and not much traffic would really suck to get hurt and no one come by to help especially here in the dessart when its 110 degees out dont think you would last along time I carry alot of water with me.]
So im going to start investing in more safety gear Im Disabled so I like to ride as much as i can almost every day to wally world to get meds and such its only a mile but a fun mile

It's a law that a motorbike rider wear a DOT approved helmet in my state, so I always got a helmet on. A brain injury is scary stuff so I would highly recommend playing it safe and wearing one. As for other gear, I'd also recommend wearing a jacket and gloves since people tend to use their hands and arms to break a fall.
I wear a black half helmet, black leather motorcycle jacket and black leather fingerless gloves. Though sometimes I skip on the jacket if I'm going to a nearby store so that I don't look like an aggressive biker guy when I enter. The helmet and gloves fit under the scooter's seat but not the jacket.
