pour a little oil down the plug hole and re-check the compression see if it rises you may get away with just new rings. While you have it apart check the cylinder for scoring. Then check the valves if they are leaking. Then test it out if it runs good a cheap fixer fix for the lady. Alleyoop

they want an 80cc kit so i ordered an 80cc kit with head, just wondered if other stuff could be broken, or if the engine could be totally shot?

Can't be completely shot you tested for compression so it does turn over. When you take the piston off check the crank for play. Alleyoop

I checked compression by kickstart the electric didn't work, I thought because the battery was dead since the horn sounded weak

Try using thicker oil too. 15W50, better seals. Hope the bearings didn't wear out!

Depends how "out of oil" it was. Hopefully there was still a little in there to keep the crank wet. Worst case it probably won't fail right away but those bearings probably took a beating.

Too bad you couldn't just throw a known working top end on, it'd be more work(?), there just to "hear" if the crank is shot--although checking all three points for sideplay would be the thing to do. I know things aren't always easy, but I'd hate to spend money on a big bore kit knowing it wouldn't matter.... I'd also hate to put an 80cc top end on, and have a shot crank.
Tough one and good thread! I'm leaning towards CopperDeer's response--- how "out of oil" was it?

I mean as GOOD solid advice? THE whole engine COULD be shot, yeah? I mean it could run great after putting in the top end, but you don't want the same scoot coming back...later for engine trouble. The easy, LAZY, answer is---- buy a new engine. However------that's not always a bad solution. I respect millsc more than most. lmao

I have several 49cc top ends, I offered that first, told her 80 bucks and parts free, she said she wanted to upgrade. Going to tear it down today when it warms up, I will report what I find.

A flat all in $80 labor for the top end reassembly is plenty fair imo ...stupid panel workz and all. cheap mechanic_all Joe's shops here in southern usa are $60 an hour book time. I just disagree with you on the used parts ...being free. My first resolution ...after disassembly : They'll need to buy the new required parts ...you'll end up keeping the scraps if any once their off and scooting again. They usually don't care, gas mileage is great again A new crank, rod, and bearings unit is only $60...with free shipping. ...course you might have a used one too for $20 : many times they order the parts themselves and ship them rite to you If you have refurbished or otherwise reusable parts the storage or labor required to have that re-useable inventory was still not "free" zip ties, fiberglass, bondo, and drill bits get expensive brutha ;D 2 Walmart LED trailer lights $10

well i put a piston jug and head i already had on it just to see what would happen, the compression returned, but it wouldn't start, ive checked for fuel spark, changed the cdi coil and carb still no luck. I'm sure its something simple like a ground, not going to do anymore until the 80cc kit comes. Seems like the crank is ok it cranks over smooth and normal just no start.
