So I only have 190km on my scooter and haven't done the first break-in oil change, but I took out the dipstick, cleaned it, and checked the oil a few times... dry! How is this possible? My engine runs fine! Should I go ahead and change the first oil now then?

Change the oil or add some your choice don't leave it whatever you do. How did you check the oil? I think on the 50's you screw the stick all the way in someone please correct me if i'm wrong...

Well, I've changed the oil on 2 of these and was told to not screw it in, and it should be at the line or slightly above, HOWEVER, I tried screwed in and not screwed in... and it was dry all the way down the whole thing!
I think I will change it and put some good stuff in, but am I really doing any damage by not waiting for the 300km break-in?

If there it shows no oil, I would be safe and assume that it is pretty empty. I would add more or do a full change. Doesn't cost much in these scooters and could potentially save the engine if there really is no oil.

Made sure you have scooter on center stand on a flat area. Doh! You are a genius! The dipstick reads a little less than half now when fully screwed in, about a quarter full when not screwed. I should probably still change it, it seems really low and I don't know what was in there originally. I don't believe there is a leak because I keep it in the garage and there are no drops, but the people who originally assembled it were the most qualified dealers. |

Or if they even put it in. Also tilt the scoot to the side a bit when draining. youd be surprised how much extra comes out. Why wasnt the oil level checked before even starting it for the first time?  Too many people (like me) buy the scooter first then come to these boards. If people researched first theyd understand PDI. |

It was driven to my house and I just assumed it was in working order. I haven't had any problems with it, so never really worried about while I waited for the break-in period. When I first bought it, it was just for fun as a toy, didn't think I would start modding it or care about performance.

What was in there originally was just a shipping oil to prevent corrosion until it was uncrated and prepared for use at which time the shipping oil in the engine and final drive should have been drained out and the specified engine oil and gear lube put in.
We have been having actual temperatures of over 100 degrees here the past few dog days of summer and effective temperature of around 115 degrees so it is critical to get that shipping oil out of there before running the bike again. It would also be in your best interest to flush out the brake fluid and put a good Dot4 non-synthetic brake fluid in.

Even with the scooter on the center stand you have to make sure to rock the scoot so its level,,mine usually sits on the front wheel with the back off the ground so I rock it so both wheels are off the ground level then check,,mine is a 150 and I like it to cover the whole area on the dip stick while not screwed in...real close to a full quart. BTW-The first thing you want to do is get that garbage chinese junk oil out of there right away,,I wouldnt even start mine until it had Rotella in it,,same with the gear box.  |

You guys seem to've missed that paul said ... but the people who originally assembled it were the most qualified dealers. To me that would mean they did the PDI. ESP since they even delivered it! After all, that's the dealer's job. It's why you pay more (usually) instead of just having it drop-shipped. I didn't do a PDI or anything on my scoot, 'cause the dealer did all that. It might be a good thing though, paul, to ask the dealer what they did when they assembled your bike. >'Kat |

Kat "qualified dealer" with Piaggio products and TaoTao is not the same thing. I was actually wondering who qualified the dealership and where that qualification came from?? Just because the dealership was nice to you and that they delivered doesn't qualify them for any thing I would assume they uncrated it and hooked the battery but I wouldn't assume anything else.

It was some Brazilian guys working out of a storage unit.

Put scooter up on center stand on a level surface. When checking oil level in a qmb139 engine, do not screw the dipstick in just push it in. The oil level should be at half way up the marks on the dipstick.
