If this problem has been covered I apologize. I have just installed a 50mm BBK on my scooter. The kit came with pretty much the works....coil, cdi, jet, rollers, piston, rigs, etc.... Can't stress enough about proper torque of the head..... Anyway, I'm really happy so far with the exception of this erratic behavior when holding 30mph or when lightly holding throttle when going down hill. Runs ok at 35 or at 25.... There are no problems when I am throttling hard at 30 like going up a hill or grade. I set the valves to .005 and the jet from the kit is installed along with the coil and cdi....
I have to say that the hills that I crept up I can roll up at 30 mph easily....some even 35....
Thanks for any help....

Sounds to me like you need a bigger idle jet.

Or just an adjustment of that circuit. Try to richen it up a bit

Thanks dudes....I'll try to richen it then order a bigger idle jet if that doesn't do it......

Erratic at around 30mph, you did not explain what it is doing when holding 30mph? Is it bogging, lurching back and forth, any sounds from the motor, popping, brats sounds etc.. Around that speed the Needle is not all the way out. So it could be a simple adjustment to your needle. If it is LEAN around there RAISE the needle one notch if RICH lower the needle one notch. Definitely try leaning it like Alley said before you order parts if the richening doesn't work. You really were a bit vague.

OK...let me try to be a bit more clear....the engine tends to cut out then revive itself....throws me forward a bit.. I don't hear any odd pops or noises but it's hard to hear with the wind. brats sounds...I think I know what you mean....I don't think I hear any sounds like that. I richened the fuel air mixture 1/2 turn and I thought it may have helped but after a 4 mile ride it wanted to stall. I got it running again though and it idled fine. I'm going to pull the plug tomorrow. See if I can get a read. Then readjust the idle and look at the needle....try to determine from the spark plug whether to go up (richer) or down (leaner).
Thanks Kindly

Just to update you a bit and hopefully get some feedback......I dropped the needle a notch (raised the clip). Seemed to help a bit but it still bogs some and then recovers usually after coasting and giving it a handful. The plug was pretty black before but now it looks nice and clean with a tan color on the porcelain. But......another issue is that I'm having trouble starting the darned thing. Got to hold the throttle open the whole way.....not sure if it is flooding or not getting gas at this point. While adjusting the mixture screw at an idle it seemed to be ok with the screw closed the whole way.....ran alright. ..... It will falter if I open it a couple turns......not sure but this may be my problem......

Sounds like the idle circuit is too rich now/still. You could try adjusting the mix screw with the needle back in the original position or if it runs ok where its at now and the plug looks ok leave it there...

Well....I am back to a non-running scooter....guess I have to strip the plastic off again.....I'll tell you....I have bought carb rebuilt kits....jets....a carb....a bbk.....and ever since I had this thing I have had fuel problems or hesitations..... Now I can't get gas to the spark plug....dry as a bone after cranking for a while....better get a starter ready cause it has more miles on it than the scooter. I don't see how you guys have so much fun.....i'm not the luckiest guy out there I guess.

If closing the Fuel Ratio Screw all the way and it runs ok at idle the PILOT JET IS TO BIG BRO. Either that or FUEL IS BEING sucked in from someplace else. Did you check your ENRICHER it may not be shutting off the extra fuel after 3-4 minutes. Also take the VACUUM line going to your petcock and check if it is wet from fuel, if it is the PETCOCK is allowing fuel to flow throw the VACUUM line(if so replace petcock). Alleyoop
TRICK OF THE TRADE to find if running rich or lean:
When you run it and it starts to act up BACKOFF THE THROTTLE about 1/4 of an INCH and hold it there. A. If the scoot speeds up it is LEAN at that position. B. If the scoot just settles down it is RICH at that position.

Im going to review what I have done so far.....I ordered a 50mm BBK to increase the 50cc to 80cc....the kit came with piston/rings, cylinder, main jet (size unknown), coil, and cdi.....all of which are installed (also there was an oil pump and pump sprocket I didn't use...). After the installation the scooter started fine.....ran well.....but there was a hesitation at about 30mph while just holding speed. Also after coasting down a hill and then giving it a hand full. I posted this thread to try to get to the bottom of it. I started to have problems starting the scooter. Hand to give it some throttle. Then more throttle and then I had to open it the whole way. today I was running it to check a light bulb that had burned out on the low beam. It was running fine....shut it off and it never started afterwards......can't get any gas to the spark plug. There is gas in the bowl.....I can drain the bowl with the drain screw......I think the fuel pump is working. I have had the pump fail and run into the vacuum line but in that case it flooded the cylinder. I have taken the carb off to check the pilot.....must be very small cause I could hardly blow through it.....put one in from my other carb......I put the needle back where it was in the middle notch. trying to get back to ground zero. going to take the carb off agin and strip it down.....clean every piece.....and check the manifold, vacuum line, and fuel pump.....

You can completely bypass the fuel pump or valve as long as its gravity fed. You can get an actual fuel shuttoff valve that u open up manualy. This way u will never have problems with the stock vacume valve again. I recomend getting an open aor filter like a uni if u upjet. Also if you have the cash i would also recomend a hp exhaust and a new or ported head this way you will have an unrestricted flow of fuel and air through the engine. To me it sounds as if you are not getting enough air flow at the time you reach 30 mph.
