Hello All been a little while since I have been on here... It has been in the upper 110"s here in PHX and I just don't feel like wrenching in the heat.... Anyways, I got up the urge to install my new head I got from Scrappy... For whatever reason I felt like puling the cylinder off before installing the head just to be sure everything was OK. without a doubt. That honestly looks like you got something in there. You need to make sure your filter is clean and that you are not sucking in dirt somewhere.
it looks as if contaminants ran down from around the top and down the sides. My Ktm's always had this problem at sand tracks due to a very bad airbox design. My engine builder once showed me what I thought was a new cylinder but in fact a severely damaged one he had just removed from my race bike and I couldnt believe how such small imperfections / scaring of the cylinders / pistons effected performance.

Cool thanks...not what I was hoping to hear.... but glad I looked... would have been a waste of time if I had not looked into the cylinder and piston and had at last thought there was an issue. Scrappy has the top end rebuild kit for $50 so I will just order for them again.

Heck your connecting rod for play as well. If you did get something in there you could very well wear out crank bearings and such as well.

Yep, a new piston and jug is needed. It looks like a heat or lack of oil problem. Cant really see the top of piston but it looks pitted. possibly running lean or oil pump is shot. The piston and cylinder are scored pretty bad. there would have been a lot of metal in the oil. If this was my engine I would split the case and flush it out. I'll explain why, When you drain the oil it is almost impossible to get it all out because of the way the case is cast. If you drain the oil from the side oil drain plug a small amount of oil will remain in the case as it cant flow over the hump in the center.  the oil filter plug has a lip on the inside of the case, so if you drain oil from here a small amount will remain in the case.  When the case is bolted together the hump in the center goes all the way across the bottom of the case. So even if you take out both drain plugs there is still about 3/8 to 1/2 inch of oil in the front portion of the case that cannot drain over this hump. Roy |

didnt you notice metal shavings in your oil or in the screen ? make sure you change the oil as recomended . this way you will catch the problem early. you are def gonna have to tear the engine apart and get all shavings out . may want to replace all the bearings inside also , im sure there is meatal shavings everywhere.

did you run it without an air filter or maybe a hole in the air intake somewhere ? I would check the crank for endplay , I think you sucked something in the air intake or the was not torked correctly . You could just replace the jug and pistion .

This is true, however he still needs to tear the engine apart and do a coplete inspection and cleaning . And id be concerned about the bearings and oil pump.

Hey all - thanks for all the comments and replies!
sorry I didn't respond sooner - was right around the 4th holiday...
So this is a 150cc scooter I bought off Craig's for pretty cheap.
I have not actually had the chance to ride it. When I took it home I realized the head gasket was leaking, so my rebuild began...
The original owner had the entire engine rebuilt prior to me buying it off him.
It may be because of the air intake for the reason the jug and piston are all jacked up. The seat apparently broke and he never fixed it and rode around on it for a while. With the airbox directly under the seat, he was actually sitting on it and broke it away from its supports. When the airbox broke away it cracked on each side and left holes from where it was supported.
When I changed the oil, I really did not notice many, if any metal shavings in the oil - but then again I didn't strain it to look for any...
Although the damage could actually be caused by my repeated attempts at starting it while I was trying to figure out the reason it would not start.
Its quite possible that I just need to replace the cylinder and piston. I will try looking into it a little more need see if I need to do a full teardown....
So far I have only purchased a new head, air filter, and some smaller parts. I would prefer to not have to buy a new engine if I can avoid it...
