Let us know how it went. (although I suspect you just might have nailed it.) But even still for 30 bucks the Mikuni is still cheap insurance.

[replyingto=barnie]barnie[/replyingto]If this happens when going up hills, its a classic sign of your carb float being too low. This will not allow the bowl to hold enough fuel. Now if the problem goes away if you take the diaphragm off and on and corrects the problem, then the main jet needle. It gets stuck in the up position. When opening the covers allows you reset ten needle. Hope this helps.

Good idea. (the float bowl) He may wish to check the float bowl needle for gunk or corrosion.

I adjust float when I had carb off, put back on and had a heck of a time starting scoot, test drove and (yep shut off going up to 50mph, check feul line to pump, gas flow good, took pump off, it looked good to me, put back and (spray some cleaner in the inake line, starts fr a few seconds and shuts off, got gas to filter, took filter off clean with carb clean, put back on, still gas to filter, no ghas to carb

Richard, open the carb bowl drain screw and drain carb, the close screw and crank engine a some and then open the carb bowl drain again and see if u get a decent amount of gas out of the drain hose. If it does that would indicate that the carb is at least getting gas. It has to crank for a little bit to fill the bowl in carb. Your valves are adjusted good so u get maximum vacumn correct. Remember the older cars that when u stomped on gas the vacumn windshield wipers would quit till u let up on the gas, that's the same thing that happens at wot. the vacumn drops way down where if you pump is weak the gas quits flowing and the engine runs off what is in carb bowl, When that's gone the engine quits. Then u have to crank for a bit to fill it back up and away u go. Keep searching, u'll find it. Barnie

Barnie Yeah sounds like you need to ditch the non electric fuel pump no or not enough vacuum going up the hill and get the Mr Gasket electric fuel pump with a small amount of PSI not to much like fuel injected.

I have been struggling with this same thing, hesitation, poor starting, power loss at wide open throttle, missing on hills. I tried a lot of things including a new vacuum fuel pump, and finally bought a Carter P60504 electric fuel pump and a Purolator #53 adjustable fuel pressure regulator, both on Ebay, installed them, set the pressure to 1 pound psi, and it started in a flash, idled smoothly, and runs without any problems. I think I fixed the problem. It's been such a long struggle, I am not sure it's really OK, but I've got my fingers crossed.
The fuel pump cost me $30 and the regulator was $21, shipping included.

The Mr Gasket electric fuel pump has a micro fuel filter included puts out 4PSI.

Here is what I went with DF-44 Mikuni fuel pump, test drove yesterday and it made 60-65 easy, but in the hill choked twice but didn't shut off, had a/f set at 3 turns out, last night turn a 1/4 turn leaner, will test drive today. Attachments:

Good job Richard, those are nice pumps and pump a lot of fuel and can also be rebuilt if need be. Alleyoop
