My wife's mc-54-250b has a little over 5000k on the clock. I have changed the final drive gear oil no less than 6 times (first time at 5 miles). Every time I drain it there is metallic shining micro specs floating in the oil. Any guess what is wearing?

wow doesn't sound good. I change my gear oil every time I change my oil. Never get any metal since I bought the scooter with 1200 miles.
Did you buy it used? I hope someone replys. If I were you I would start taking the scooter apart and going down to the gears

The fingers on the clutch basket get worn by the corresponding fingers on the fiber plates every time you squeeze the clutch lever. That is the main benefit of separate engine/trans cases. It keeps that crap out of your crank and rod bearings.

Sounds like bearing material the casing or the bearings themselves. Alleyoop

The dry clutch held in your CVT casing never touches the gear box. Your gears are wearing. What are you using for oil in there?? To some degree this is normal for gears that may have some of the same properties as cheese... Sorry couldn't resist. You need to make sure you flush all the metal bits out when you change it because keeping any in there will breed more. Try using some Marvel mystery oil instead of oil to fill it. Run it on the stand for a bit and drain that out. fill with the cheapest oil you can find (SAE Non Detergent 30 is a good one as it is similar to gear oil) run it on the stand for a while drain and repeat until you see no metal bits. Then fill with a good full synthetic gear oil. Hopefully will solve your problem... Could be bearing like alley says too but you would be able to detect some play in the wheel.. Can you. Check that before the flushing...

Sounds like you got some of the gasket pushed into the gearbox on one of the changes. You may want to flush it out with some carb or brake cleaner (chlorine free) and refill with fresh gear lube.
Are you having any issues with vibrations or fractures in the muffler/exhaust? If so you may need to get new bearings in the gearbox.

Quail, Sorry to hear about that. I use 80w90 gear oil and I have over 15,000 on my MC-54-250B. (no problems)

A little bit of metal is normal especially at break in,but not as much as you speak of,,do you have a magnetic drain plug and is the rear making any whining noises?
