This might be a foolish question but I have a 150cc and weigh about 185 on a good day and my wife weighs 105, so is 290 lbs to much for that little engine? I looked through the supplied "manual" if you can even call it that,(I'm pretty sure a small child wrote it,the grammar was awfull) but anyway I saw no mention of max load.we only ride 2 up every so often a few miles along the lake now and then,I just don't want to blow it up! It seems perfectly content cruising at 45-50mph.

Should be no problem. I think the weight capacity on most 150's is around 350lbs.

290# is fine. Shoot... I'm not too far from that solo. The combined weight will account for slower acceleration, lower MPHs, and lower MPGs at worst. Most max weights for 150cc should be in the mid to upper 300#s.

What is the breaking point for these frames? I routinely put a full cart of groceries plus me and my girlfriend on my scoot and I'm always scared im going to bend the frame

few scoots or motorcycles (those flimsy 50cc ones) have a carry capacity of 300LBS. The stronger ones usually are 350LBS. It has very little to do with the frame, everything to do with the rear spring. You'll know when you're over the limit, when the rear fender hits the tire, or when riding over bumps no longer gets cushioned by the suspension.

For a month or so I only had one spring attached, it rode me, the girl and a cart of groceries without bottoming Out.. I guess I've got at least 450 lb on those pair, now that they are connected again.

Depends on tire size , frame and suspension . My Echarm is a 150 with 16s and says weight limit is 350 but I have had 400 ( 2 x 200 ) with no issues . My old TaoTao with 10s had a weight limit of 220 lbs as I have seen many sag with the wimpy stock shock . My Echarm has dual shocks and never has bottomed out unlike a buddies Gator 150 that would with me and him on it with a single rear shock .
I would see what shock(s) you have in the rear and see if you can find a nitrogen filled one instead of oil . My scooter dealer has some custom made for his personal scooter for 300

The 590lbs is the front and rear combined axle capacity not scoot weight.

Most single shock Chinese scoots have about a 220 to 250 lb capacity while twin shock scooters will carry safely between 300 and 390 lbs. The Aprilia all have over a 460 lb capacity from the 50 to the 500cc scooters.
On some of the Chinese scooters it is the law of diminishing returns that applies. For example I believe that the lighter Roketa Bali 150 has something like a 390 lb capacity while the heavier Bali 250 only has a 330 lb capacity.
