Hello everyone. I live in Destin, Fl, a beach community. I'm currently considering opening a scooter rental company. This will move very fast as the busy season is approaching now. I had originally considered going the cheap Chinese scooter route, but have changed my mind after research. It seems that those scooters would be in the shop more than on the road. I have ordered 20 Honda Metropolitans. I have a good location right on the main beach road. I'm waiting on liability quotes that I should have on Monday. The Honda Metro is supposedly a very durable scooter that maintains great resale value. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone else that may be in this business or has looked into it before. These rent in the $25/hour range or $75 for the day. Our main busy season runs from Memorial Day thru Labor Day with a couple of weeks before and after each holiday. Thanks in advance for any input.

Good luck with your business! If I come down that way, I'd certainly rent a scooter from you.

You certainly went top-shelf with the Hondas. I might have considered the Linhai Aeolus 50 for a lower-cost option.

They are nice scoots but you will have a hard time competing with the the other guys at those rates. I Live in PCB and scooters places here are going for 5 per hour and 40 per day. I imagine that that since it's only 30minutes away that the guys with the Chinese scooters are renting for the same thing in Destin. Since you're starting small you may be ok with the few that are willing to pay that day rate. As soon as possible I would add some Chinese scooters so that you can compete with the other guys. Get a dependable mechanic and you shouldn't have a lot of issues as far as that goes. I personally would have went with the Chinese scooters because of cost of scooters and parts. At 1900 for a base model Honda you could have bought 3 times as many Chinese scooter. Anyway good luck with your new business and let us know how it goes.

I assume you'll also sell new scooters and do repairs too right? I'm from Panama City and then went to college in Pensacola and I know how dead the beach gets once tourist season ends. You'll need something to do during the off season. There are a few scooter rental places in Panama City and they mostly use the cheap chinese scooters. The biggest renters of them are college kids down for spring and summer break and they treat the scooters like crap.
I don't really have any specific advice for you, but I've worked out on the beach long enough to know it sucks working with tourists so much. So, good luck. Hope your business does well.

Thanks for all of the responses. I will only be renting and only open for the season. I have other sources of year around income. My order will not be processed until tomorrow. Tell me more about the Linhai Aeolus 50. How easy is it to get parts when needed? How do they compare with the Metro on durability and reliability?

After a little research, it looks like I can purchase the Linhai Aeolus for approx $1100. How does the resale valuse compare to the Metro?

The Linhai Aeolus 50 is just another brand of scooter coming out of china. Most of the parts are coming from the same place as the other scooters. It has the same motor and body as the ones you can order for $599 and the same ones that all of the other scooter rental places are using. You would basically be paying double for the same scooter. They are renting the $599 scooter out until that get about 5000 miles and then selling them. That averages out to 150-220 rentals on that scooter. That $6000-$8800 you have made on one scooter that you paid $599 for. Now the good part, You get to sale that scooter for $350-$400 dollars when you are done with it. If someone wrecks a scooter and it's not usable its no big deal because now you just strip it and use it for parts. I could go on but you would get tired of reading. Just keep doing research.

Unfortunately they're probably right, my only qualm with Chinese scoots is long-term ownership, nobody will likely pay more to get away from them for a short ride or even an entire day. So from a business perspective that is probably the way to go. I know it'll be a PITA to keep them all running tip top, but you'll leave yourself a lot of room for that. And in my experience usually they develop nagging issues overtime, it's somewhat rare for them to abruptly wind up dead in their tracks (while a customer is out with one).

The advise I'd give, is go with something GY6 based. Parts are easy and cheap to get. Also, before you select a model, make sure you can get replacement body panels, cheap and in color. How good your scoots look will be a direct reflection on your business. People don't want to rent something that looks junky. If you get scoots with trunks, keep duplicate keys in a key box in your office, incase someone locks the keys in. (it will happen)... a decal under the ignition with your phone number on it can be helpful as well.
If you do go with trunks, don't use the cheesy one's that come with the scooters.... they are crap, garbage, like to pop open, not shut... feel cheap, yada yada... you can get a decent truck for 40 or so on ebay. You could even have two rental rates... with trunk and without. (removable trunks would be awesome)
You might think about getting an extra swing arm. That way if one does go belly up, you can change it out quickly, and get that scooter back out on the road earning you money, then you can rebuild the swing arm at your leasure and not stress if you have to wait a few days for a part or two.
It's just what I'd do...

I'll toss in my .02... If I were to open a rental shop right now I'd probably go the route that most of our successful rental shop customers go and rent out Kymco Agility 50s for 4t and Like 50s as a 2t option. Easy part availability and especially in the case of the Agility 50, they take a spill well. Chinese built with Kymco's attention to detail provides a pretty high quality scoot with a low financial outlay. Best ROI in the scooter rental business right now IMO.
Not that I've got anything against the Honda Met... It's a really nice scooter.

Call John at Valley Scooters. He should be able to give you good info on the Linhai's. I believe Linhai has some sort of connection to Yamaha, not just cloned copies. scootersus.com/aeolusscooters.html

But why spend $999 on a scooter when you can get the same one for $599. Most of the parts are coming from the same manufacture anyway. They will be used for about 5000 miles and sold. If it were a personal scooter I would say buy the Honda but it's not. If i was going to budget $999 per scooter I would buy the $599 and then but plugs, belts, rollers, cdi, coils, tires, gear oil, oil, Ect. Ect. Because if you are going to have a rental store you are going to want to be stocked up on all of that stuff anyway. It's a plan that most of the other scooter places are using because it works.

Yes, it would be a successful business, but location is everything. Florida seems to be the perfect location to do something like this. There are only a handful of States worth doing something like this. CA, FL, AL, Tx, Hawaii, GA, SC, MS, ect.. Southern States and Hawaii.. Most States get snow and would only be good for Spring, Summer, Fall. Would not be full time business, unless you had a scooter rental and video game store combined. Best of luck.. You have a good location. My friend Randy owned a scooter rental store in the Keys of Florida. Made it a success..
