Its a 2008 BMS 260 scooter with lots of miles but runs great. (Accept today) While riding I noticed a short loss of power once or twice, kept riding trouble free for 30 minutes or so and then power loss. Had to push it home. Will crank and try to start a little then nothing. It was running exceptionally well til now. Any ideias out there? Seems to me probably fuel delivery! The tank has plenty of gas & 50 miles from last fill up. If this is the probelm where is a good trouble shooting senario. Thanks in advance MAX

howdy, i'm not a mechanic so it seems really silly to comment, but no one else did so---i would start by checking the plug wire and if that is all right, pulling the plug which could tell you about fuel delivery. if the plug is dry dry dry and has spark which can be checked by removing it and reattaching the wire and grounding the plug while cranking to check the spark. that all should tell you whether the problem is electrical or fuel.
then get back here and someone smart about such things can actually help you.
lotsa miles and smiles to ya ken

Hello. sounds like the scoot has been a good ride so far. Here are some things you might look at. Check your valve clearance, if the valves are too tight the scooter will have symptoms like you describe. It could also be that the vacuum operated fuel pump quit working properly. Hope that helps

How about the belt? My belt had to be changed after 2k miles!

First check and make sure the cap is screwed all the way on the spark plug wire. Many times this will back off and cause the engine to stumble untill the gap gets so bad that it won't run at all. Sometimes you will loose the coil and CDI from running an extended time with a bad connection at the cap. Start with the simple things and then work your way up and down through the system. Once you verify spark then you can verify you got fuel then work your way toward compression, valve and ignition timing.

ok - Sooo I checked the fuel delivery after the filter and gas runs well indicating the fuel pump is working.
I pulled the spark plug and grounded it and turned the engine over and there is a real good spark.
the question now is where to go from here ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks, Max

ok, check it at the float bowl drain. Is there fuel in the float bowl? I know you checked it after the filter but, when you pulled the line at the filter, the pump would be pushing fuel down hill, rather then uphill (like going to the carb)... If you have spark and compression, then it's a fuel problem. If you have fuel at the float bowl, then check to see if it will run on Carb cleaner. Either shoot a little bit down the carb throat or down a vacuume line. If it fires up, then it's a fuel problem. You could have a plugged jet, or someother madness going on in the carb. If not it's time to check compression and spark timing(you said it has spark). If compression is low, adjust the valves. If the spark is fireing at the wrong time (sheared woodriff key) it may still have spark, but have spark at the wrong time in the cycle.

Had this exact same thing happen to my wife on a nice ride one day. Main jet was totally plugged, in fact with a lot of cranking you could get it to start and idle but if you even looked at the throttle it would die.
Time to pull the carb and give it a good cleaning, check the diaphragm for a pin hole and while you got it down do a valve adjustment.

Prodigit - Ironically the belt on this scoot has over 13K miles on it and is down 1 mm in width with no cracks or other evidence of wear. I would have thought a long time ago the belt should have to be replaced. Has no slipping either. I have replaced the variator and Splined face of the variator due to problems with that.
Thanks Max

Thanks JR
Its easy to adjust the top intake valve, have any ideas how to get to the lower exhaust valve for adjusting and how about clearances?? Thanks JR Max

Hi max, Intake .004 exhaust .005 or .006 (I have mine set at .004 & .006) And yes the bottom can be difficult but I've done it enough times, just have to take off plastic side loosen bottom to drop and you can get too it.

[replyingto=max]max[/replyingto]One never knows with the gas you buy today. On my scooter I had a good filter but the main jet's tiny holes were totally plugged and with carb cleaner and a air hose I got her going quickly.

JR How do you get under it, Do you have a scooter lift? What do you use to get under it for the valve adjusting any ideas? Max

Oldbiker - The scoot has over 13K on it
I have enjoyed the ride but not so much the experience as the scooter has been down a lot for many things. Have done many oil and trans oil changes including brakes and coolants Wouldnt start Local dealer was useless, I had to transport it to BMS LA and they found a shop towel hung up in the head and valves. They modified the carb and air cleaner locations so you could get to the spark plug. They did this under warrantee. But I still drowve 800 miles RT and rented a trailer to haul it Variator came loose off the cranks spline, had to file the crank spline to fit the new variator and torque it down. Bent rear wheel due to hard hit on ruts in roads, Blown tire from this and replaced rear wheel. Thread on bolts were useless when removed steel going into aluminum. Aluminum threads stripped out. Brake handle switches twice both sides would not let the scoot start. repalaced brakes, pads, calipers and discs Throttle problems replace throttle control Speedometer cluster replaced due to vibration the cluster came loose and was shaking to pcs. plastic all over the place. I've probably forgotten a few thisgs but in a nutshell its been and experience and I now have a lot of mechanical knowledge I guess I needed. Max
