Or bent the connecting rod/cracked the piston.
The "rope trick" is a reasonably safe way to hold valves in place to allow removing the spring keepers/springs/seals/etc. without having to remove the cylinder head - it's not intended as a means to hold the crankshaft in place in order to remove the variator nut, as the break-free torque can be high enough to damage downstream components (piston/rod/bearings/crankpin-flywheel alignment).
A compression/leakdown test is in order.

Best to use an pneumatic (compressed air ) impact driver . Plenty of videos on You Tube . May have to take apart to really inspect if you damaged it

Theres no grinding noises either as i would have expected to here if there was rod or crank damage. How would i inspect my valves....take off cover an spray them with compressed air?

Liquid Wrench has helped me get stuck bolts loose . Should be valve adjusting videos on You Tube . You measure the clearances with the engine cold . It is easy to bump a wire loose like a ground so double check the simple things often over looked

lol! The only thing you should have done is use the brake to prevent the wheel from rolling. Taking out the spark plug actually causes the engine to move more freely.

idk if this info will help you but i found this yesterday on another forum:
i've never worked on scooters before so i don't know if this info has any value but another member quoted those posts with a "+1". so it appears to have value to someone. good luck!

just wondering your putting the motor at top dead center before adjusting the valves right?if its got fuel spark and compression is should crank maybe not run right but something get a cheap compression tester find out what your really putting out. what color is the spark and whats the gap set at? did you ever get the variator apart and why?

I was going to ask the same question It appears he just took off the valve cover and adjusted the valves where they sat. JUSTIN, 1. Take the Valve cover off. 2. Then by HAND using the VARIATOR turn it COUNTER CLOCKWISE until the CAM SPROCKET is aligned like in the PICTURE. THEN you can adjust both valves to .004 inchs. Alleyoop
