Probably because nobody really wants a Savage (they are practically given away used), the parts are mostly worthless .... Damn! You really hate the Thumper, don'tcha. Facts: The Suzuki LS650 was first produced in 1986, and is still being built. MSRP: 2000: $4,249 2001: $4,299 -- $50 increase 2002: $4,299 2003: $4,299 2004: $4,349 -- $50 increase 2005: $4,399 -- $50 increase 2006: $4,399 2007: $4,399 2008: $4,399 2009: $4,899 -- $500 increase 2010: n/a, motorcycle market crash 2011: $5,099 -- $200 increase 2012: $5,399 -- $300 increase 2013: $5,699 -- $300 increase 2014: $5,499 -- $200 decrease! 2015: $5,499 2016: $5,499 In 2008 someone in Suzuki noticed that the S40 keeps getting sold, and started jacking up the MSRP. Yamaha noticed that the Thumper keeps plodding along, and for 2015-16 they have marketed the SR400 -- at an MSRP of $5,990. A rather interesting bike. It is not "retro." It is the same bike originally made in 1978 and has been produced in the Japanese Domestic Market since. They haven't bothered adding an electric starter -- it's kick only. There are those who appreciate the qualities of the Big Single. Enough that they can continue produce the S40 year after year. We like our Thumper. We don't care if you don't. We don't bad mouth your motorcycle choice. Why do you have to rag on the S40?

As I said, Suzuki did too good of a job on the counter-balancer, very low vibration. At touring speed the the vibration is like the massage bed in a cheap motel. A sport bike has a higher frequency vibration, like the drill in a dentist's chair.

Riders without helmets should, when they crash, be left to bleed out unless they have at least ten million dollars of medical coverage. Riders that wear helmets tend to ride faster, crash harder, and statistically have more deaths. Helmets should be left on the race track, not racing on the streets. Why don't you ask helmeted riders also be left to bleed out? Why do you hate people that simply enjoy riding. The S40 is not a racing motorcycle. Mostly, people that ride the S40 do not ride stupid. That is why Progressive listed the Savage in the first and third slots on least crashed and least stolen motorcycle. (less crash = less stolen for parts.) Note: Took off the helmet at the California/Arizona state line and didn't use is again until back entering California. ('cept about an hour riding thru a rain/hail storm.) The Suzuki LS650, S40 or Savage depending on the year, is an excellent city bke that can do just fine touring the Interstates.

When California mandated helmets 40% of riders sold their bikes, or left the State. It's a start, I suppose. That is why the automobile insurance companies paid the Legislature for the law. Mandate helmets, 40% less riders, 40% less payouts by car drivers hitting motorcyclists. Yes, it is a start. The automobile insurance companies want to ban motorcycles. The is not about helmets. It is about banning something others don't want.

... The Savage/S40 could use a bigger fuel tank. The stock tank is very Sportsteresque. The Sportster Superlow has a 4.5 gallon tank! My Savage has a nominal 2.8 gallon tank, but mine was 2.91 gallons. Tested. Twice. Luckily is light for pushing to the gas station. I had no problem on trips -- it is easy to find gasoline stations on the Internet. Even on US-60 I had no problem getting gas. Two hours on the saddle is about time to stop and stretch your legs anyhow.

Hot Flash -- *NO* motorcycle with a carb has a fuel gauge. Yeah, the Savage was first produced in 1986, and it is still being produced. You do not sell a motorcycle, mostly unchanged, for 30 years, unless it is a very good bike for what it does. It is not a speed demon. I once got it up to 85mph, without a windshield, and the wind is not comfortable. But after getting a small windshield it did do just fine doing 65-75 mph on the Interstates from L.A. to OKC. The Savage is an excellent city bike. At just only 380 pounds wet, a 100 pounds lighter than a Burgman 400, with a 652cc single, it is *very* quick. Sure, a Burgman is smoother slipping past the wind and can go faster -- but at a cost of heavy bloat. Hot? Not really. Lots of people on the Savage Forum run in summer in the South West deserts. Shaky? HUH??? It's a damn 652cc THUMPER! It is supposed to thump, shake. Unfortunately, Suzuki did too good on the balancer -- it is ridiculously smooth. (If you want shaking, try a ride on a Cushman-II) As for cramped if over 5'5" -- my 5'9" on my Savage: (Damn! Same black denim trousers and blue ATT t-shirts on Tour and Christmas Shopping in 2007 and 2010!)

... bought a 2009 Suzuki 650. This bike is great.... And I see you have already joined the Savage Forum I bought a 2000 Savage in 2004, killed it in 2012 and got the Vespa. Still miss the out of the hole acceleration of the Big Single. I cannot understand getting a "sport" bike. The Ninja 300 ABS weighs more than the S40. The torque of the singles trumps the horsepower of the multis -- when the traffic signal goes green the Single is gone and the 600 and 1000cc four cylinder sport bikes have to break the speed limit to catch up. Congratulations, excellent choice. Hang around on this forum to help others that are thinking about getting a motorcycle.

Space is highly engineered to be as safe as possible. Water is old school technology, engineered to go down, safety is not a priority.

... my first manual shifting motorcycle ... yet to master the clutch and change gears.... Takes time. To up gear you have to (1) throttle down (2) declutch (3) shift (4) clutch (5) throttle up -- coordinating (1) right hand (2) left hand (3) left foot (4) left hand and (5) right hand. You are learning five moves to shift one gear. It takes time for your brain connect the parts. But eventually it becomes automatic and the whole thing takes a third of a second without thinking. I still miss the manual....

Pappy was U.S. Army in WWII, Mum was Royal Army, both survived. My brother and I were in the military during the Viet Nam war, but both avoided active; he served in San Francisco and London, I mostly in the Mediterranean. Harry Kruk was a marine during the Korean War, survived. Alex didn't.

I hate plastic. Generally plastic goes brittle and shatters after a decade or two. My Santa/Sled has only 3 years in the weather.
