[replyingto=michaeljc70]michaeljc70[/replyingto]I took the spark wire off and made sure that I put it back on tight, changed the gear oil (been meaning to do it, not thinking it would help), opened CVT cover and looked in there (didn't take off nut though since I didn't have an impact wrench).
I tried to start it and it started and stayed running. Tried 10 times since then. Runs/rides fine. No idea really what the prob was. Loose spark wire??

Sounds like your variator nut may have loosened up. The nut is on there tight. I can't take it off as I don't have an impact wrench. I can borrow one if I need to, but not sure if I was heading in the right direction.

I drove somewhere yesterday and when I went to leave, my Tao Tao ATM-50 wouldn't start. Sounded like it would, but didn't turnover. I got it home, charged the battery, check spark plug/wire and tried to start it. It started but within a couple seconds I heard a grinding sound toward the back and it shut off.
I upgraded the roller weights a few months ago...maybe 300 miles ago. 1000 miles total on scoot. Any ideas? CVT was my first thought. My mechanical expertise is very limited.

After I installed an A9 cam, I went from ~40mph to 46mph consistent max. The A9 helps with the mid to upper rpms so you can get those extra mph's. I found one on ebay for $30. I have a TaoTao ATM50. I changed out the rollers and now can get up to around 39mph. If I change to a cam like this one, will I see any improvement? How hard is it to do? Seems like it would be easy.

Never mind. I saw a video on YouTube. I was just not using enough force I guess.

I am trying to stop a vibration in the upper front panel in my scooter (2012 TaoTao atm50) and also figure out where the brake fluid goes. The manual I have is generic and was of no help.
I removed 2 screws and a bolt on the upper assembly. It seems the front upper part, which has the headlight and is metal, and the back upper assembly, which has the speedometer and is plastic, are bonded together. They are both loose after removing the screws, but I can't seem to get it off. I removed 1 larger bolt on the front and 2 smaller on the passenger side of the scooter. Any ideas?

The front brake on my new 150cc scooter is a little squishy and the span of the hand lever is too wide. It is a disc brake (Chinese gy6 scooter). Is there an adjustment for the span? I don't see anything obvious. I'm thinking there could also be air in the brake line.

Because modding is fun, simple as that I enjoy taking scoots apart and trying new parts its a hobby and a side job for me. I get that, but the vast majority of people are just trying to a get a little better performance. It is like remodeling a house. Some people really enjoy the work/process, but most just don't want to live in a dump.

That is why I suggest marking the Variator to determine what he may need in the CVT. If the belt climbs up high then you NOW know it needs more RPMS. This is pretty simple stuff, but you have to know how to DIAGNOSE not just throw out a bunch of stuff and waste your money getting this and that and you gain squat. Alleyoop I'll give that a try. From what I've read, these Tao Tao run very lean. I haven't checked my spark plug yet, but need to do that (I replaced it recently and the old one looked okay). I believe they are set to run lean for meeting certain emission standards in the US (CA mostly I think).

Most TaoTao ATM50 riders in Miami beach, I see riding with speeds averaging 40MPH, or greater. Most modern scoots do 40MPH GPS, without performance upgrades. I disagree. These scooters are made to run under 30mph in order to meet restrictions in many states. For example, in IL if you have <50CC AND it goes less than 30mph, you don't need a special license. The TAO TAO site lists the top speed as 30-35MPH. Why on earth would they do that if the scooter easily did 40MPH? I believe the reason many people do upgrade them is to still have a <50cc (at least for licensing purposes). Otherwise, why not just buy a higher cc? I mean, many of these Chinese scooters, you can get the 150cc version for like $100 or $200 more than the 50cc version. Why spend hundreds trying to get better performance when you can get much more performance stock than you will probably ever get with upgrading without any aggravation or risk?

I think that quoting a speed with wind pushing you or going downhill is silly. Of course, my scooter will go 50 if I had a 20mph wind perfectly pushing me.
Has anyone drilled holes in the airbox or replaced the air filter? Some people claim good gains from that.
I was personally happy to get the 4mph gain from the rollers. I am not sure if the performance variator will yield me much more beyond that.
I live in Chicago in a very urban area. Street speeds limits are technically 30, but most people drive 35-40 when there isn't a lot of traffic. I am just trying to avoid being plowed over. Upper 30s mph would be sufficient.

Install a larger mainjet or even better a new carb that is tuneable instead of sealed . If it has a Torch brand of sparkplug replace with a NGKDPR7EA or the iridium which is better . Mine came with 8 gram rollers and zoomed with 5 gram rollers . Maybe a gram heavier slider will help out top end . A BBK is the best way to get more power and will require upjetting From what I have read, this carb is hard to get open. Any suggestions a new one? What kind of gain can I get from that? Do I have to tune other things if I replace the carb?

Once you pass ~500 miles, and the initial break in is done, things will go better. Just make sure the tires are pumped to 35PSI, and I personally took out the spark plug, and hammered the arm a little closer to the tip, and put it back in. 10W40 is about the best oil type you can put in there. From there, it's just waiting until the engine is hot, and you'll be going 45+MPH! I put synthetic Castro 10w 40 oil in. i put in iridium spark in it. I put premium fuel. I have about 700 mile on it. I did inflate the tires...they were way low after winter. Oddly enough, they didn't produce any gains (well, so it seemed...with wind variances, etc....at hard to tell). I read about all these people saying they are getting 45-50mph on one of these scooters. Ultimately, it seems they 1) weight like 110 lb 2) have a "secret" 62cc. 3) have spent a ton on bbk, a lot of upgraded parts, etc.
