I drove somewhere yesterday and when I went to leave, my Tao Tao ATM-50 wouldn't start. Sounded like it would, but didn't turnover. I got it home, charged the battery, check spark plug/wire and tried to start it. It started but within a couple seconds I heard a grinding sound toward the back and it shut off.
I upgraded the roller weights a few months ago...maybe 300 miles ago. 1000 miles total on scoot. Any ideas? CVT was my first thought. My mechanical expertise is very limited.

Sounds like your variator nut may have loosened up.

Sounds like your variator nut may have loosened up. The nut is on there tight. I can't take it off as I don't have an impact wrench. I can borrow one if I need to, but not sure if I was heading in the right direction.

[replyingto=michaeljc70]michaeljc70[/replyingto]I took the spark wire off and made sure that I put it back on tight, changed the gear oil (been meaning to do it, not thinking it would help), opened CVT cover and looked in there (didn't take off nut though since I didn't have an impact wrench).
I tried to start it and it started and stayed running. Tried 10 times since then. Runs/rides fine. No idea really what the prob was. Loose spark wire??
