Always use the gear, all the time. I am currently waiting on my riding pants (i have a pcx 150 and my wife has a 85cc taotao zummer that i upgraded.
No matter the distance, the speed you will be driving, anything. It always is smart to go through the process of gearing up and getting ready 15 min before you leave.
My roommate went out to pick up a 6 pack 4 blocks away from my old house a year ago.. he put nothing on, i told him ide drive him but he said dont worry. 4 hours later after he left i got a call from the hospital saying that my friend was in a coma going through facial reconstructive surgery after getting hit by a car that jumped a red light.
Does not look the same, never leaves the hoise without gearing up, and that 4 block gearlessdrivd cost him 25 grand at the hospital, even with insurance.
Long story short, ide rather be hot and sweaty and have my co workers call me the night rider when i roll up or leave work on the scoot covered in gear and be safe than get messed up cause i just wanted to go and come back quickly.
Gear up, be safe, have fun riders

What makes you think is rich? If it's the same carb and jets, it should be lean now. If it gives you trouble, back off the throttle a bit. If it stumbles then recovers, is rich. If the engine speeds up (RPMs, not MPH) when you back off the throttle, it's lean. If you need to adjust for issues at speed, try raising (to richen it up) or lowering (to lean in it) the needle. Moving the clip down or adding washers will make it richer, moving the clip up or removing washers will lean it out. If you are adjusting for idle, you adjust the air/fuel mixture screw. It's on the lower left side of the carb, and may be covered by a brass cap. To remove the brass cap, you drill a tiny hole in it, then take a body panel screw, turn it into the hole till the brass cap pops out. Turn the A/F mixture screw clockwise to lean it out, counter clockwise to richer it up. Also, its a main jet. If that is too high let me know i have a bunch of jets i can swap out quick. Sorry for all the little spicific questions, just havent delt with the sensitivity of small engines in a long time.

If it's stumbling off the start, it could be the needle or the accelerator pump (if you have one). First, try taking some bend out of the accelerator pump lever, that will make it deliver less fuel when you first twist the throttle. If you can't fix it adjusting the accelerator pump, then you may need to lower your needle (if it's adjustable). Adjustable needles have a clip and notches, you move the clip up/down a notch at a time to adjust it. To make it leaner, move the clip up a notch, which lowers the needle allowing less fuel out of the pilot jet until fully raised. Sir, i need to shake your hand in person, perfection by the way. Not only was it an adjustable needle which i made a bit more lean, but ive noticed the gas consumption go down a little more for the better. You're a fricken genius. I would have been breaking apart crap all day, but thanks to you, took me like an hour of finding and fiddling with. My wife also says thanks.

Jesus man, where are you gonna get the space for the sound system, i wanted to do that on my wifs zummer... but its just, not enough room to work with... ide have to stretch the bike move the gas tank back and lower where the carb is sitting....

But yes to what you originally stated about letting off the gas a bit, it slows down a bit.... but the lower tone rpms go away and it sound higher pitch.

To remove the brass cap, you drill a tiny hole in it, then take a body panel screw, turn it into the hole till the brass cap pops out. Turn the A/V mixture screw clockwise to lean it out, counter clockwise to richer it up. It only stumbles/ stutters from a start. For example, if i rev it a little.. it will lower rpms to stalling area...sometimes it does stall when i do that. But only if i just rev when stopped (which is kind of silly of me to di anywya since its not a manual). But the other thing that prompted me to think its rich is that its eating gas a bit fast, i though when it was too rich that your gas consumption would go up higher than norm. But maybe im just not used to the bigger kit yet, its not crazy guzzling or anything.. its just getting like 67 miles a tank instead of to . But im just tinkering with everything so that when i give it back to the wife, she wont notice a difference other than pickup and speed.

You could also sell the tao tao and put the cash towards a different 50. You might find a good deal on a Japanese or Italian scoot that performs better. That's the route I took, at least. Almost. I haven't gotten around to selling the old scoot yet. You know i told her that i could do that for her before i installed it, but you know wives... when they like something they stick with it... i even offered to get her the Zoomer X by honda but she really likes the cage storage under the Zummers seat (that is the only difference between those two bikes... i promise, looks wise, the only difference is that the zoomer x has no enclosed underseat coverage, the zummer is not rain proof... but it has a cage surrounding the area under the seat, so contents wont fall out.. Thanks for the tip though guys

The 100 BBK is actually 82cc. It should allow you to reach 45mph and the engine will be screaming at high rpm. Anything more and you would need to change the final drive gears. I swapped it, its running a little rich. How do i go about leaning it up??? Do i have to change the main jet for a smaller one??? Running very well though... hitting 50 with no wind in the face pinning the throttle

Get her a license, and buy her a 150? She wants to go a little faster, but we cant afford to pay insurance on a car and 2 bikes... shes been in accidents, so her rate is pretty shitty.. thats why im considering doing the swap.

So guys.... i have a hilarious problem...my wife got so jealous when i got the honda pcx.... she msde me get her a 50cc and teach her how to ride it (she is 28 and never ever in her life has been on a 2 wheeler, she wants to be able to just have something to zip to her friends house or work whenever she wants to save the 4 doors gas pretty much) So, heres the hilarious problem, she wants tk keep the taotao zummer i originally was gonna get for myself.... but thanks to you guys i wised up and got the pcx. She wants me to "trick out her 50" as she said Lol... my question is, can i put a big bore kit 85cc or 100cc on a taotao??? And if i can, what brand or type yall recommend? I hear that cc is enough for the little scoots, that the 100 cc 50mm kit is a little much and does not make a huge difference from the 85cc kit.. Give me some insider scoops brothers! My wife wanta to scoot faster !! LOL

Welcome to itistheride Knowing some things about your actual needs might better help us to help you make a choice sooner and more specifically. Without more concrete info, it's not as easy to make better informed suggestions. 1) What is your height & weight? 2) What kind of roads do you expect most of your riding to occur on? (hills, pavement, any dirt roads, max speed limits on those roads to be used, any expressway riding intended?) 3) Where will most of the riding be done? (city, urban, rural,?) 4) What kind of distances do you expect you will be riding? A lot of the Japanese bikes might be a little more expensive than Chinese, but are generally known to be pretty reliable, but if you don't mind being vigilant with maintenance, then some Chinese bikes would be OK (I suppose; personally I tend to favor Honda bikes) 5) Have you checked on scooter forums where most of the bikes are Japanese? Most forums for any scooter will often have sections on known issues for their genre/favored bike manufacturer of bikes. (frequency of problems for various systems and their repair/maintenance solutions etc) investigating this may help in your decision making. 6) A rough estimate of your budget would be helpful to know. (you should also budget for protective gear. Helmet is a must for your safety even if the laws allow for no helmet riding. + A jacket with at least some rudimentary armor and high visibility attributes, gloves and boots to protect your ankles. Other items like riding pants and rain gear would also be a good idea for better protection and comfort) Securing your bike to help prevent theft is also a consideration to bear in mind. (various locks & cables are available; some better than others) 7) What is you level of riding experience? Taking a basic rider course through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for example, would be a good investment if you are lacking in experience. (and may be a requirement for obtaining a motorcycle endorsement even though you will be riding a scooter as many states consider any motorized bike above a certain size to be a "motorcycle") Scootering (done right) is more than just getting a bike and twisting the throttle. 8) Do you prefer new or are you OK with used? New is going to cost more (obviously) But as previously stated, good used Japanese bikes tend to be fairly reliable, parts are available almost anywhere in the US. Though they may be more expensive than Chinese parts, repairs and maintenance are likely to be less frequent than with a Chinese bike. 6 of one, half dozen of another. Just a matter of how busy you are willing to be keeping the bike in good running order. There are a lot of types and sizes of scooters from many manufacturers from several countries and selection can be daunting. Help us help you more effectively by getting back to us with answers to as many of the above questions as you can. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * That covers a lot. Maybe others here can suggest questions if I've missed something else important to know to help him with his selection of scooter. Thanks alot everyone, i made my decision amd love it. I ball'sd up and got a 150. I took everything everyone said into consideration especially bandito2. I was really leaning towards a 50cc because A, im slim and weigh 178 180 depending on how much im eating and my work week. I have a son and my income is... okay, but could be better so i could be more comphy on expenses and bills. I live in miami florida where traffic is absolutely horrible, so a small bike would help me zip through traffic, and in florida hills are non exsistant. As a car driver, i was an expert at finding my way to and from my destinations by zipping through neighborhoods instead of the clogged main streets. And the bad history was the main thing bothering me, the last time i was on a two wheeler, i was 18 and into dirtbikes and atvs and racing them on the tracks, was thinking of persuing a career out of it, but i really messed myself up on a jump, breaking my clavicle and 3 ribs, tearing the tendons in both my wrists and almost loosing 2 fingers de to landing a hair off and falling off with the bike going over me. So needless to say, i was pretty scared after that. To get to the point, i figured, i live 4 miles from my job, but im prolly gonna have to move into a bigger residence when my son gets older, so i went with a honda pcx 150, was a little pricey, but i could not have picked a better scooter, the bike mechanically looks very similar to my old honda dirt bikes, just not as exposed. Its great for me to take my wife to the beach and zip aroundaround town to do small errands, had it for a litter over a week and ive put over 150 miles on it.... i can just smell the savings in gas. Bought a scorpion 3/4 helmet and impact gloves(still looking into body armor and pants and boots) and perfect time for sports authority to be going under, got all my rain gear for 40% off... got like 300 bucks worth of rain gear at almost half the price. All in all, thanks guys You really helped me get through the maze of the internet. All my future questions comments and concerns will be for yall to talk about on here Itistheride indeed. Spencer

So i have been a car junkie my whole life. Never was into scooters. But gas prices and my 91 acura are just getting too expensive to maintain and live with.
I have been looking at scooters and just have been lost, finding one i like looks wise, then reading a bunch of hate reviews and love reviews about it, then finding another and another and another, i just am worried about buying the wrong brand and having to spend alot to keep it running. Im a DIY mechanic when it comes to my car, i dont take it to someone to fix (have replaced the engine and rebuilt the tranny amd done a million ither thinga to the car) so i dont neglect my investments. I just want to hear comments that are as unbiased as possible from you guys.
So here we go, I am looking at the taotao 50cc zummer, i like the look and it looks well put togethere than the cheaper models. What are your thoughts everyone? Good move for a first scooter? Or bad idea, keep looking??
