If it does not have a shroud around it and air can blow around it I would think it would be Ok I would jet it a little rich to help cool it.

Did it strip the threads or round off the edges of the nut?

I drilled holds in my air box and scooter fell on its face it would only go about 20. It popped and skipped. With the stock jet that was a 108. But oddly it ran great with a cone filter on the carb with the same jet. I don't understand how but that's the results I got from drilling.
