Yeah, and then there are the standard Gates belts, which are very similar to the belts that come on the scooters. And the Premium Gates belts, which are evidently very good. But, I cannot find a Premium Gates in the 729 size to save my life.

Those little springs don't make a whole lot of difference. They will help with takeoff a bit. It makes the clutch engage at a higher RPM.
What you need to do to maximize your CVT is to change the torque spring. The big spring in the middle of the clutch. You said you have 6g weights in now? So change the torque spring out to the yellow, 1500 spring, and change the variator weights to 7g weights. I think you will be very happy with that. That is what I have found works best for me. 1500 torque spring, and 1g heavier variator weights.

I switched the variators I was using. I am using the DLH variator now, and I will update on how it is holding up. When I say the rails sheered off, they sheered off. I don't know if the guides broke first, or not. They sheered off right at the edge of the "wall" on the variator, so they were even with the "wall". I will post a link to the belts I have been getting lately. I cannot find a Gates "premium" belt in the 729 size, just the standard Gates. I have a 52mm BBK, and a regular belt will snap in there in a couple of days. I found these belts on ebay, and when you hold them, and compare them to regular belts, they just appear to be such a better quality. Performance, especially top speed, is increased greatly with these, also. RPM at top speed is 1500 RPM less with these than with a standard Gates belt. Anyways, here is the link to the belt. www.ebay.com/itm/KEVLAR-729-17-7-30-PREMIUM-CVT-DRIVE-BELT-GY6-49CC-50CC-139QMB-LONG-CASE-BELT-/271082023182?hash=item3f1dbf690e:g:n1UAAOSwo6lWMBu7

I agree. I drive a scooter made in China.
I guess what I was getting at with my comment about them being made in China is that you don't know what you are getting when you order a Gates belt now. There are so many knock offs out there, and the prices vary so widely on their belts now, that I just have a hard time trusting them.

If you leave the dip stick out of the oil fill, then turn it over. If oil shoots out of it, then the oil pump is working. It may make a bit of a mess, but that will tell you.
If the oil pump isn't working, you would have locked it up pretty quickly while running it, I would think.

Just use the battery. It's OK. If you are going to replace it, get a lithium battery.
Yes, replace the belt with a Bando, or Gates.

No on the tires. You won't have the clearance on the back. The belt is longer on scoots with 12" wheels.
I would get a new one, unless you want to put a new top end on your scoot you have now. That noise, and the white smoke makes me concerned it is burning oil. Head gasket.

That white smoke issue probably means it's burning oil. Check the oil very frequently. It's not good, combined with that sound. You probably need a new top end on that thing.

I bet it's the variator. The weights have gotten jumbled up in there, or the guide rails have sheared. Check that variator.

Hoca BBK

Post by steve on Dec 8, 2015 7:02:51 GMT -5
So, I just ordered the Hoca 52mm BBK, and matching head. Had the cheapo ebay version. I decided to get something nice. It was expensive. I am excited, and just wanted to hear anybody's experience with the Hoca stuff.
I have heard that the good, hand ported heads make all of the difference. This head was expensive, so I assume that it meets that criteria. I have an A9 cam that I am installing in there as well. Anybody have any experience with these nice cylinders and heads? I am looking for stuff to get me even more excited, and motivated about installing this thing.
I also ordered the Taida high torque starter. Those things are a must when you put anything 50mm, or larger on a 50cc.
Thanks in advance for your input,
Steve

I didn't even know it was happening, until Rock mentioned something about it in a thread I made about a variator failing. I went and looked at them a couple of days ago, and it is crazy how much those belts have grooved the variators. I will post pics this weekend, but the belts just wore grooves in them that I'm not sure pics will be able to show.
I had issues with the guide rails shearing on a couple of variators. Do ya'll think that was due to the kevlar belts?

I have some severely grooved variators. I will post pics. I'm talking about in less than 1500 miles. I think I need to change to real Gates belts. Or Bando.

Get a new variator. One of those DLH variators. Use between 7 and 8 gram weights. Use the 1500 torque spring, with some heavier weights than you usually use, and get a high quality belt. Your top speed will be as good as it can get that way, while still being able to climb hills.

your brakw shoes are probably worn out, hence the squeaking, or the spring is broken back there. Worn out shoes will stick.

Are you sure it is not sparking when you kick it? Is it turning the engine over? I haven't had a kick starter in over a year on my scooter. It broke when I installed the big bore on it, and it ain't coming back.
You have to kick them pretty good to get them going. If you have to do it too many times, the kick starter will break. They are cheap as heck on the Chinese scoots.
