'dude, are you scooting those awful roads with awfuller drivers? Egads! >'Kat Yes, 'Kat it's true. My trusty 250cc scooter is my main source of transportation. Although I might be looking into a 600cc scooter soon to deal with the faster freeway speeds. My scooter does a respectable 80mph, but that's flat out all she's got. I need a scooter that's capable of quick acceleration even at 75mph in case I need it. My Grand Dink is valiant, but doesn't cut the mustard in the kind of murderous highway traffic I find myself in each day. I might even have to take a serious look at a bike with more like an 1100cc engine or bigger that can really cut a rug when the throttle gets turned. I don't think I've seen a scooter with that kind of muscle. At least not yet anyway. I'll never get rid of the Grand Dinkster, but soon it won't be my daily driver. The wild ride to work and back each day demands something more muscular.

Hey guys! How'z it goin? I know it's been a minute since I posted, but man oh man have I been busy. I got spoiled with 8 weeks off work between jobs. It's nice to be back to work. A man shouldn't lay around the house all day. The new job is just shy of 25 miles from my house. The surface streets are almost impassable because of having to go through downtown Phoenix. I took that route the other day, and almost hit some homeless bum riding his bicycle illegally across my green light. I swerved to miss him, and he threw up his arms at me like it was ME who was the idiot! He's lucky I didn't turn around and run him down! The freeway isn't much better. I have to take the I-17 truck route and it's just about suicide. Cars running bumper to bumper at 65 and 75mph, and are prone to slam suddenly on their brakes for no apparent reason. Potholes in the road big enough to swallow a VW bug, missing slabs of asphalt for 500 feet at a time. The I-17 freeway running through Phoenix is a dirty, dingy, nasty little highway that's loaded up to the gills with ill-tempered, bad mannered, rude little people clogging it all up. I take my life into my hands every single day driving back and forth to work. I'm half tempted to get a helicopter so I can skip the whole mess.

Scootdude,
You won't have any trouble hooking up the wiring... I'm no electrician myself... LOL! Once you get TO those pesky wires, you can see which ones head to the tail lights and turn signals. Find a ground, then just test to see which one goes to the tail light, and which one goes to the stop light. While you're at it, I'd tap into all the wires you might want to use later... Tail, stop, left & right blinkers and a ground, then run those new wires out to where you can easily access them later, maybe inside the seat pan. THAT will save you a LOT of disassembly and fuss later on if you decide to light up the trunk, etc. Now go knock 'em dead on that new job! Ride safe!Leo Awesome post! Thanks Leo! Yeah this weekend when I get a little time to dig into it, I'm going to fuss with the electrical wiring and fix up the old gal. I ordered a genuine LED brake light on ebay that should come in sometime later this week. It's one of those buggers with about 40 tiny LED's all over it. It's going to really brighten up the tail and brake lights. Then I'm going to pick up some more LED strip lights and mount em up to the back trunk, and wire em up good and proper. You all know how much I love to post pics, so I'll be sure and post a bunch when I've got it all done. The new job is AWESOME! Best job I've ever had. I was lucky to get it. It was a 1 in a MILLION stroke of luck getting this job. It was like hitting the jackpot. And best of all, I get to serve active military personnel and veterans. I tried to go into the military back in 1988 and was stamped 4F and rejected. So I never got a chance to serve. So it kind of chokes me up now that I get a chance to serve in at least some sort of capacity. Cheers!

Ouch! Your poor ankle! Just reading your post made me cringe with sympathy for what must have been an excruciatingly painful injury. I hope you heal up and feel better! Keep scooting on!

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!! LOL! Some of the best BBQ in the world is found in the country of Texas. Everything's bigger in Texas. 10 gallon hats. Jacked up trucks. Some of the biggest women west of the Mississippi. And by far some of the DUMBEST politicians ever to take public office. Governor Rick Perry. I rest my case.
I wouldn't ever resort to lane splitting. Even in the direst of personal emergencies or any other type of big fat hurry I might be in. All it takes is one cager to turn suddenly, change lanes, open a door, etc etc etc. I've seen people do it. And they take their lives into their own hands. Life is fragile, and precious. Why waste it because you wanted to save yourself 2 minutes in traffic? Nuff said....

LOL yeah I'll have to wire up the side lights more permanently. It's hooked up very temporarily right now to the charging port. It's going to be a week or so before I can tackle it since I start back to work tomorrow. I'm going to have to buy a test light and dig through the wiring harness in the back of the bike and locate the brake wire so I can hook up the brake light LED's. I hoped to get a little help from the shops here but they all avoid it like the plague. The mechanic at the Kymco shop was even bragging to me the other day about how he hooked up LED's all over his new Kymco 150cc. But the manager at that shop acted like I was asking him if I could sleep with his wife. It was really kind of incredible the angry response I got from that guy. Wow!

Lookin' GOOOOOODDD!I don't know what you tapped into for these lights, but your brake light should hook up the same way: positive LED lead to brake light wire, negative LED lead to ground. Just remove that pesky seat-pan, and you'll find the wires going to the tail light, brake light and blinkers. I hate pulling the dang seat out, but if you need me to, I'll do it and find out what color wires go "whrere". I should have written them down when I did mine... Duh... HOLD IT... I think my shop manual has a teensy wiring diagram! I'll see if I can find it and add to this reply for you. Hey, when Kymco sees your bike, they might bring back the Dink in stealth mode! Leo LOL! Thanks Leo! I actually ran those lights directly off the cigarette lighter adapter / charger port under the seat. I guess no one smokes cigarettes anymore. I quit smoking them back in 2012 and I assume everyone else did too. LOL! Anyhoo, as far as the brake lights go, I'm going to pick up another pack of LED lights tomorrow and I'm going to pull the seat off the scooter and by God I'm going to DO IT! No one else is going to help me, so I'm going to do it. My dad always told me "Son, if you ever need a helping hand, you need look no farther than the ends of your own arms". How right he was. I miss my pops. On another note, I had a few to drink tonight, and I went out into the garage, and I decided that I would take on the mistakes I made with the paint. There were a couple spots where the paint drooled because I was careless. I took some sand paper and I smoothed out the offending spots. I then cleaned them up thoroughly and let them dry. Then I took my trusty paint can, shook it up vigorously and carefully repainted the spots that I had screwed up. I can't believe it but now all the drools are gone!! I have a true ROAD WARRIOR bike! I took her out for a ride (before I had the alcohol drinks) and I was stopped at a light. A burly guy on a Harley pulled up next to me at the light and mumbled something to me. I tipped my visor up and said "Huh?", and he said "I thought I'd pull up next to your mean ride". Then the light turned green and I let him take off in front of me. He had a Hells Angels jacket on with an ARIZONA tag on the bottom. I don't know if he was paying me actual respect or was just making fun of me. LOL! I think he was just making fun. I guess I should count myself lucky that I didn't get shot. ANYWAY, I digress, so as I was sanding away, and repainting the mistakes I made on my initial paint job, I heard a song in my head. It was 1:30am and I couldn't really crank a radio in my garage, so I had to listen to the music in my head. And so I heard "You are my scootie, my only scootie, you make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you, please don't take my scootie away". LOL! I've had WAY too much to drink tonight. I'm rambling. Don't mind me, I'm a total NUT! I like to think I'm an entertaining NUT! LOL!

You definitely CAN get strip LED's at auto supply stores and they're great quality. They ARE a little pricey, and selections are limited, but it's convenient. I guess I've been buying and selling on eBay for SO many years that I'm just spoiled by the low prices and having the stuff delivered to my door... Most LED's come direct from China, and the incredible variety to choose from is SO appealing... LOL! Just me... Heya! I got some LED lights at the auto parts store and wired them up on the sides of the bike where light sort of just gets absorbed like a black hole and everyone pretends they cant see me. So there's one problem addressed. I need to pick up another set of LED lights for the back trunk to tie into the brake lights. I'm not really an electrically inclined kind of guy, and I don't want to mess anything up. So I called my local Kymco shop and before I could even finish my sentence, the guy cut me off as soon as I said LED and told me they aren't interested in helping. He said I'll have nothing but electrical problems and went on to say that the electrical generator on scooters can't handle any extra electrical load whatsoever. He said he wants no part of it and won't help. He suggested I put an LED 1157 bulb in the tail light and call it good. I'm not thrilled with that answer. I'd like to wire up some LED strips that make the bike much more visible and safer on the road. Anyone have a suggestion for how to go about getting electrical wiring help? I wonder if there are any solar LED lights that would soak up enough energy during the day to run brake light LED's at night?

Hey thanks Leo! I really worked my tail off on that bike to get the paint done. It's not perfect by any means. There are areas that I screwed up because I was hurrying, or not paying close enough attention, or whatever. But perfection need not apply. I wasn't going for perfect. I was going for no more FLUFLU birdie crapola. I love the Dinksta, but not the paint job. Just like an overbearing mother-in-law, it just HAD to go. I'm really kind of shocked that it turned out as well as it did! Thanks for the bone! I'll add it to my bone collection! As far as the LED's go, I'm going to run down to the parts store tomorrow and see what I can rustle up. I really should have done it today, but I was stuck in L-A-Z-Y mode all day. This week is the last of my lazy time off between jobs. Tomorrow is my last hoorah. Starting next Monday I'm going to work for a new company. I'm really excited to get started with the new job, but I'll have to say goodbye to all the leisure time I've had over the last 5 or 6 weeks. So I have tomorrow and this weekend to get all the led stuff installed and wired up. I'll probably be asking dumb questions, and making dumb mistakes on it, but that's half the fun. I love to tinker in the garage. So it should be fun if nothing else.

Actually, I think it's pretty cool that they're using a non-supermodel as the star of the show. Usually in movies it's the ultra-unrealistically gorgeous women like Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, and Sharon Stone who get starring roles in stuff like that. It might be a dumb comedy, but at least we can score 1 for the mediocre people!

That's very technical. My brother is a GM technician, and when he wants to check o2 sensor readings or other technical readings on the go, he has an interface unit that he plugs into the car's computer and then gets real time sensor read outs. Are you going to rig up some kind of similar contraption to catch the actual readings while riding? I'm pretty sure that you'll get different readings testing it under an actual load vs just revving up in the garage. I look forward to your findings.

Walmart carries light strips like that in their auto section. Auto Zone, Pep Boys and other auto parts stores may have them too. Thanks bandito!

scootdudeI installed the sensor to be able to know exactly what fuel/air ratio my engine was receiving. It made the carburetor tuning very easy, but also allows me to know if the engine is running too lean or too rich. Too lean could result in the engine overheating, and too rich could cause fouling and excessive carbon buildup. Emissions are the least of my worry. Wow! Very scientific. I had no idea. That sounds like a great way to keep the carb settings under control.
