Filtering is ok if done responsibly, lane sharing on the other hand is plain dumb; one can be the best rider out there, but the person on the car next to you can be a dumbass on wheels and make you crash. Filtering is allowed here, but there are the usual dumb people in both side, the car and the bike, that keep crashing and causing havoc on the roads

Woo-HOO!
I'm a long-term Texas rider, and am STILL laughing at this quote from the article... "If you’re a Texan motorcyclist who’d like to enjoy the benefits and increased safety of lane-splitting, now is the time to contact your legislators."
Oh, BROTHER... Is this writer brain-dead? Or, has he/she never ridden the streets of Texas?
I've ridden here now for more than 35 years on choppers, baggers and now scooters, and trust me, lane-splitting is probably THE most "off-pissing" action a rider can engage in. You might as well blow your horn, make eye-contact with the cagers on each side, and give 'em the bird with both hands...
Once you have the audacity to get between two vehicles, one or both will risk wrecking the sides of their cars or trucks to ensure they MASH you soundly between them... Or, one will just open the door in front of you to ruin your day. 4-wheel drivers don't give a dang about damaging their own vehicles, so long as they can wreck a biker. All too much of the "Easy Rider complex" going on here to risk lane-splitting.
NOT for ME... Been there, done that, got the T-shirt AND the stitches... LOL!

Big difference between Texans and the Nuts and Fruits in La La Land. Not only don't attack us riders, I paused splitting when the driver of a truck opened a window and folded in his mirror to give me more space.

When someone says I can do something IF I wear a helmet, I'm thinking I am heading for unsafe territory.

Even if they approve the law, I still would not split lanes. It's not worth getting injured by some stupid driver.

THAT is enough to give one new hope for mankind! It truly IS good to hear of an area where bikers of any description are actually treated like human beings. Most places I've ridden over the last 50 some years look at bikers as "targets"...
Ride safe!

When someone says I can do something IF I wear a helmet, I'm thinking I am heading for unsafe territory. Yeah... When someone says I NEED a helmet to do something "legal and safe" red flags go up fast! It's like a jurisdiction telling me the area is perfectly safe, but you should still bring a gun if you have one... Ride safe... especially when sneaking between two 4x4's throwing beer bottles at each other... LOL!

I couldn't agree more!

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!! LOL! Some of the best BBQ in the world is found in the country of Texas. Everything's bigger in Texas. 10 gallon hats. Jacked up trucks. Some of the biggest women west of the Mississippi. And by far some of the DUMBEST politicians ever to take public office. Governor Rick Perry. I rest my case.
I wouldn't ever resort to lane splitting. Even in the direst of personal emergencies or any other type of big fat hurry I might be in. All it takes is one cager to turn suddenly, change lanes, open a door, etc etc etc. I've seen people do it. And they take their lives into their own hands. Life is fragile, and precious. Why waste it because you wanted to save yourself 2 minutes in traffic? Nuff said....

I agree with Leo about the "increased safety" bit.
Increased convenience, sure. But safety? If they're talking filtering, then yes that would increase biker safety. But I don't see how splitting lanes is safer rather than simply convenient. Even if you don't have folks shooting for your target, like dude said there's too much risk of lane changing.
>'Kat, staying safe in the entirety of my lane

In the cities lane splitting is probably quite dangerous. The automobile drivers all tend to move over to the side to see what is happening up ahead. Thus effectively closing up the middle space between lanes. On the freeways, if the traffic jams up, the drivers to that same thing too. So I don't see lane splitting as working OK. Then of course the type A personality road rage group seems to want to kill you too.
But maybe way out in the country away from the cities then it might work. The people tend to be much more polite out there too. They tend to move over to help make it easier for you to pass them too. They wave and say Howdy too.
California seemed unique in that all the drivers tend to stay in neat lines and not stray from side to side. So one could do lane splitting there much more easily. I haven't seen that here in Texas.
Lately the sport bike riders have been pissing everyone off with their shenanigans. A large group gets together and shuts down a busy freeway so they can perform stunts. Then they all speed off daring the police to catch them in they can. So with all the hostile motorists out there, lane splitting will get you injured or killed in short order. There have been instances of sport bike riders getting their bikes vandalized or destroyed too. Even if the rider wasn't doing any of the stupid stuff.
