I had a 500cc Aprillia that was absolutely awesome on the interstates. It just wasn't a great slow speed bike, it was very top heavy (my 1500cc gold wing is easier to deal with in parking lots and stop and go traffic, even with the clutch) That said, it was an absolute joy on the open road only second to the gold wings I've ridden, and that's saying a ton.

I had to "re-imagine" my helmet. I had a paint lift problem but I think it came out even cooler..... I added some ghost flames and I really like the result. The helmet is actually more of an orange then you see in the pictures. Base coat was white, air brush work was in black, and then top color is Ford Grabber Orange. Followed by about 5 coats of clear. I have a bout 5 hours invested.

Looney tunes characters would be very cool. I need to look for some stencils.

3900 bucks will buy can buy alot of bike. Especially on the used market. I have less invested in my whole motorcycle/scoot collection. 1500 bucks for one goldwing, gl1500, 500 for gl1100 and 500 for the 250 I have....
3900 bucks is just a lot of money.

Welcome to the scooter world.... Yeah, they are so fun in traffic... I went the other way. I went from a 150 then a 250, followed by a 500 cc scooter.... The on to the gold wings. 1100gl and 1500gl (my current ride).... The scoots were diffentaly nicer in stop and go traffic, and the 150 was probably the most fun I've had on two wheels. The 1500 is a cadillac on the road and is nicer on long road trips Just a bit heavy for the day to day stop and go commute I have now.

Actually the plastics are interchangeable if it's the 150de and 250de. (also know as the flagship). The Chassis, however, are different between the two bikes.
People are gonna flame me for this, but I think 150's are a more dependable bike and just better all around bike the the 250's. The 250 isn't much quicker then the 150, but the 250 is a little faster (approx 65 vs 50-55). The 250 tends to have more cooling and electrical problems then the 150. The 250, for example has a pretty anemic stator. The 250de also had two different fuel tank configurations. One, under the seat (better for cooling) and two, in the hump, behind the radiator and that does restrict the cool air. The 150 is also cheaper to buy the "go a little faster" goodies.... Sliders, exhaust, etc.
The electrical systems in both bikes are a little more complex then say a vintage 150. More points of failure. The connector for the headlights/front turning indicators is just horrible and fails quite often for example.
I've actually have worked on a 150 version of this bike, and I own a 250 version of this bike and I've painted both.

I've been lucky so far. I've never been pulled over, but then, I don't speed (and since I ride a 1500cc goldwing now, it would be very easy) and only split lanes, very occasionally (it is legal here). The cops here just don't seem to pay attention to me but I think that is because I don't draw attention to my self.

I've been meaning to purchase a couple of those. I learned about JIS screwdrivers on the GoldwingDocs forum.

If you go gasoline then yes, you would have to up-convert.
Also, the big blocks, don't do as well with fuel economy. The 12v turbo Cummins is an easy conversion. One wire (kill) and they make the adapter plate, then all you have to do is motor mounts and a torque converter and you are good to go. 500 hp and 500 lbs of torque and 24mpg. And if you drive it like a sane man, it will last forever.
As for the Motor home motor, you still have to get rid of the motor home after you have taken the engine out. Believe me, they are hard to get rid of, especially after you pull the power train out of them.
I help out at my buddies tow yard, and believe me, tow operators cringe when they end up with one. You can't scrap them, you can't take them to you-pull-it or any other wrecker in the area. They won't take them. There is not enough scrap value to just take them to the scrap yard. They don't want them either. I can at least run whats left of a dodge pickup over the scales and even if they give you only 10 bucks for it, at least it's gone.
Do you ever watch RoadKill on youtube? They took a big block dodge engine out of a motorhome so they could use it in a charger. They had a heck of a time getting rid of the motorhome when they were done.

I am sorry but I don't get the point of 400cc motorcycles that are about as fast as my 250cc scooter. The Enfield Bullet B5 is about the same MSRP and has twice the torque and similar fuel economy with equal the warranty. Yes its a 500 cc Thumper and not a 400 cc Twin but that eliminates complexity too. I found the Bullet with the slightly higher seat a good fit and easy to balance despite my bad knees even though it weighs slightly more and I can get a leg over as long as it only has side cases and no top case or tall passenger back rest. It will be interesting to see how they really compare on the road. They Royal En-field is also fuel injected... I've seen the bike in person, and they are NICE! My local Scooter dealership carries them. They also have a 550cc. Looks like the build quality is pretty decent too. I can't wait until they hit the used market and I can get one cheap!

The emssion laws here are complex... but since it's a 1991, I can convert to diesel and be smog exempt. Anything pre-OB2 in california is smog exempt if you convert it to diesel.

I don't want to do a work horse swap. Mainly because of the emissions testing. That is why the Cummin's swap is so appealing here.

I recently bought a new helmet on clearance. I paid 40 bucks for a half helmet with built in, drop down visor. Not a bad deal, but the paint was awful. It was flat black, and the finish felt gummy. Like they didn't let it flash properly at the factory. I really liked the helmet but the finish drove me nuts. It looked like a helmet I found at the bottom of the river, just terrible. So I broke out the sand paper and striped it down, repainted white, did my airbrush stuff on it and then did a top coat. The biggest mistake was, the top coat. I thought it was a candy but it turned out to be just a regular base coat so it really covered more then I thought it would. This has made the air brush work on the helmet, very subtile. After shooting the clear on it, I really decided I like it. The helmet still needs to be color sanded and buffed, but so far it, I think it looks pretty good. What do you guys think? (I fixed the images, they were all upside down)
