I adjusted the valves when the engine was cold. I did take the scoot for a spin after replacing the stock carb. with the Keihin. So far so good. I am keeping my fingers crossed. The jets seem to be fine for the 1pqmb motor.

Here is my dilemma. I have a TaoTao CY50B scoot, and have recently been having issues wherein after a relatively longer ride (>5miles), the engine kind of stammers and then conks out when I slow down or come to a stop sign. Everything was stock. This is what I've done since. Replaced the fuel line with the yellow tygon tubing, new fuel filter, and new irridium plug. That didn't really help, so I adjusted the valves. Seemed to be running really well, but then had same issue after a long ride. I just replaced the stock carburetor with a Keihin carb. Here is my main question. I am assuming that since the engine is a 1p39qmb (?secret 60cc), would the stock carb have a larger main jet to accommodate the larger cc's? I tried opening up the stock carb to examine the jets but the 3 bolts had their heads sheared flush at the factory (Bastards!!). If I was to order a new main jet for the Keihin carb, what size would work best for the 1p39qmb motor?

Thanks joey. I actually did remove the panels a couple weeks ago to do the plug, lines, and fuel filter swap. I just went real slow and did one screw at a time, keeping track of the order of removal. Went a lot better than I thought it would, even putting the panels back on. I didn't even break any tabs. Thanks for confirming the valve gaps for me. I'll tackle the adjustments this weekend.

So, I have to check / adjust the valve settings on a 50cc Tao Tao CY50-B retro style scooter. Unfortunately, this is one of those scoots, that you have to remove many of the body panels to get to the valve cover. It's not one of those that you can just pull the seat bucket out of. I have removed the panels successfully in the past, and replaced the fuel lines, fuel filter, and put in an iridium plug. I've viewed many threads on this wonderful sight about settings for valve clearances, and due to the difficulty in getting to the valve cover, I want to get the adjustment right the first time. What are your opinions on what the settings should be for the Intake and Exhaust. I was going to try .003" and .004". Does this sound like a good plan?

Thanks for all the replies. I checked out a Vespa forum (Modern Vespa), and since my Aprilia is made by Piaggio, which also makes Vespa's, I wanted to hear what they are using. The Shell Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic seems to be the overwhelming choice. And it's relatively cheap. I think I've found my oil.

Actually, there is a dealer nearby that sells Honda's and Kymco's. I'll check them out. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I actually looked at AF1's website, but it would have cost me $25 after shipping for 1 liter of oil. Maybe I should have kept my chinese scoot. HaHa! I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the eni i-ride 5w40 synth. But if something else could void the warranty.....

Bought a new 2014 Aprilia SR Motard 50 in November, and the dealer told me to bring it in at 620 miles (1000km), to have it's first service. The scoot is up at my summer residence, and the season is winding down and I only have about 200 miles on it. I called the dealer and asked if it was too early to bring it in for the service (which includes checking valve clearances). He said it wouldn't need the service yet, but the oil should be changed before storing it for the winter. The service manual recommends eni i-ride 5w40 synthetic oil. I am having a hard time finding it locally and was wondering what would be suitable alternatives. Would Shell Rotella t6 5w40 synthetic be a good choice?

Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately as most of you know, with this model, it is not as easy as removing the bucket. The back of the bucket is under body panels, and cannot be removed without removing body panels. I am just terrified of breaking panels, and not really sure where to start when removing them.

I need to do some trouble shooting and maintenance on a friends TaoTao CY50B retro style scoot, and am having trouble finding info on how to remove the body panels. I've scoured YouTube and can't find any videos to help me. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I need to get to the Carburetor and Fuel filter as well as possible checking the valve clearance, and replacing the spark plug.

Probably a dumb question, but here goes. Where does one buy crush washers for the gear oil bolt. I've read you should change the washer each time you remove the bolt, so that you get a better seal. Also, what size should I be looking for?

thanks scootermass for the links....I think I will check those out. I don't see any dimensions listed. Maybe I will call them. I am in northcentral Mass. Weather is starting to get good for scootin'. Will be bringing my scoot up to my Maine summer house in mid May. Thanks again......

So, I'm debating buying a new battery for my 50cc scoot. This would be my 3rd season with the original batt. , and it is definitely losing it's ooomph. I am having problems starting the scoot with the electric start, and have to use the kickstart to start it. I took it off the scoot over the last 2 winters and kept it hooked up to a Battery Tender Jr. trickle charger. From what I've read on these forums, batteries are a crapshoot and you could get 6 months or 6 years out of them. My current batt. is a 12v 3ah battery, and am thinking of a 4ah battery as a replacement. That shouldn't be a problem, right? Any suggestions on which battery to get. There are soooo many options. Anyone have any luck with the gel batteries? Should I get one factory charged, or one with the separate acid pack? I am leaning towards Scrappydog or Mainely scooters, since I've had good luck with them in the past. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....Thx....
