So, I have to check / adjust the valve settings on a 50cc Tao Tao CY50-B retro style scooter. Unfortunately, this is one of those scoots, that you have to remove many of the body panels to get to the valve cover. It's not one of those that you can just pull the seat bucket out of. I have removed the panels successfully in the past, and replaced the fuel lines, fuel filter, and put in an iridium plug. I've viewed many threads on this wonderful sight about settings for valve clearances, and due to the difficulty in getting to the valve cover, I want to get the adjustment right the first time. What are your opinions on what the settings should be for the Intake and Exhaust. I was going to try .003" and .004". Does this sound like a good plan?

I always go with .004 in .005 out. .003 is pushing the limit.

For a 50cc, I would do .003inch intake and .004 exhaust.
As for removing the plastic panels, it's just something you have to do. Your engine will thank you with reliable operation for taking the time to check on it. My taotao is the same way. But after removing and installing the plastics several times, you will be able to do it in a very short amount of time.

Thanks joey. I actually did remove the panels a couple weeks ago to do the plug, lines, and fuel filter swap. I just went real slow and did one screw at a time, keeping track of the order of removal. Went a lot better than I thought it would, even putting the panels back on. I didn't even break any tabs. Thanks for confirming the valve gaps for me. I'll tackle the adjustments this weekend.

Just make sure you are using inches as a unit of measurement.

Experiment with different settings, what may work best for one may not work best for another. Just make sure to wait about 8 hours between adjustments. It's very important to have the engine entirely cooled down, or the adjustments may be in vain due to heat expansion.
I personally set my 50cc scoot's valves to both .003 but that's through trying different settings day after day to find what worked best for it. I set my big bored engine which has a 50mm bore to .004 for both and it works great for that too, and have tried different settings.
