I know mine is off a little too, us a flashlight and try to find the mark. I don't know if you hold the nut with a wrench if the back plate would move?

That's right, it will take few turn to be TDC, (for both to line up) it can be tricky. it works good if you have someone watching the oil side, if not use a mirror if you have one you can position it so you can see when turning the sprocket and I use a magic marker to mark the notch on the sprocket housing so I can see the mark as I turn my sprocket.
Plus you want to move slow as you approach those marks, or the compression will push it pass the mark.

Above the oil fill there is an arrow on right and notch on left as you turn you will see it

Maybe time for a valve adjustment, or possibly weak fuel pump. Or could be the change of seasons, maybe running too rich and your air fuel ratio screw on your carb needs to be leaner
