Hey all, I am new to this board and a new scooter owner. I just purchased a 2000 Yamaha Riva xc125.
It was running great. Sometimes it took a couple of starts for the engine to stay running when it was cold, but today, it wouldn't stay started. It would turn over and start for a few seconds but then would cut off. Tried about a dozen times before I gave up / didn't want to ruin the starter.
I just recently changed the oil so I'm thinking that it might have something to do with it. I'm hoping not though. I read in the manual that if it was going to be over 60 degrees (I live in Austin, TX) I should put 20w40 oil in there but Auto Zone didn't have that so I went with Synthetic 20w50 motorcycle oil. Would this have anything to do with it since it's a very thick oil? If you don't think so, what do you think it could be?
Thanks, Nick

I'd check your ignition coil, make sure the spark plug is on and tight, make sure the wire on both eands are tight, If that's good and no start, Check to make sure your getting spark.

Riva's were known for an odd carb setup that was finicky when it got a little cool out. Search on Riva choke or carb problems and you should start turning up the info you need.
A Chinese scooter manual may not provide much help on the Yamaha.

When you check for Spark make sure you ground the plug on the motor itself and NOT on the frame. The battery is grounded to the frame and the motor has to be also grounded to the frame for the spark plug to fire. Bad motor to ground connections will cause the Spark Plug not to fire while in the motor.
What kind of carb do you have a CVK carb or a Slider(throttle cable going into the top center of the carb)?
Hard starting can also be caused by the valves being tight and loosing compression.
When temps drop motors need a little more fuel due to the air density. So it could just be a minor adjustment needed to the carbs fuel to air mixture. Alleyoop

Hi Alleyoop, I was thinking tight valves too, but I thought for him to check the basic stuff first, I know about two years ago I had trouble starting mine, here the spark plug wire in my spark plug came loose.

Update: I tried the easiest thing first. I filled it up with gas and it seems to be starting much better now. It had about a quarter tank in there but I guess it was something about the fuel to air mixture. Thanks for all your help!
