So you're saying i should pop off the gear behind the variator?
And yes days building up to the breakdown something didn't seem to be running right And the was a light rattling that didn't seem familiar This all started not long after I put synthetic oil in for the first time

I've seen it pressed into the tadia engines, but I've seen then just tightened behind the variator and they go right into place. Its not like a bearing how they need pressed in. The crank shaft is beveled and the gear is beveled to fit right against it . Yes, George. I've never had any reason to mess around with that gear, but remember when Dan was building up my SuperEngine he had to heat/freeze the parts so they would more easily get pounded into position. Note what Murky just said, which may lend some evidence toward a starter clutch issue.

I always figured the bevel was there so you didn't have to press it in.
Hey murky , don't worry about the gear behind the variator. I'd check the starter clutch . I know I mentioned the that gear , but I'm with rcq, I doubt that's the issue. I still believe your at the point where you need to check the starter clutch. If it were me I would have checked earlier , but that's only because its happened to me before . I'd like to see pics of the clutch before its removed and after. Also pics of the inside oof the clutch gear where the rollers contact it.

My first s clutch that Wasn't bad didn't show much damage . the only thing I saw was one of the rollers were out of place. The second one was destroyed . but with you symptoms I'd expect some sign of damage.
Sorry I've been Away for the past few days , wife was in the hospital again , but everything turned out good.

The roller on top is in place , the other 2 are not. When I pulled the gear from the clutch , one of the rollers fell out of place. They should not do that. The rollers are held in place and should not turn " out of place " . I ended up popping the other one out of place by prying on it with a screwdriver. If you find that one is out of place , you cannot just put it back in place . that means something is broke inside . I need to find the gear , I had it a few days ago and now I cannot find it . I'll post a pic in a few.

Here is a pic of he inside " behind the side cover" . the big gear in the center pulls straight out . you do not need to take the starter nut off to pull the gear off. You can also see that I did not have to take the muffler or rear wheel off to remove the side cover. You do have to remove the 2 bolts holding the swingarm to the side cover a and after pulling the side cover the swingarm will drop to the floor but will still be attached at the axle. Remember to hold the swingarm up some " almost in place " while installing the side cover or the swingarm will not swing back up in place , it will be stuck under the cover.

You need to pull the gear from the clutch. It pulls straight out.
