If that does not work , then the issue is either on the opposite side " starter clutch side" , top end or inside the case. Whoa, George. Not to argue - but thinking thru this ... That gear is a to get off and even worse to get back on. And even though Murky may not use the kick starter, without that gear the variator won't work. Seems like a million-to-one shot this is the problem, since the gear was not messed with since the engine was running fine. My suggestion would be to assume it's OK and move on. I thought Apricot was going to take pix of the valve timing (the cam gear and the flywheel) ... just in case ... and I thought he would verify the placement of the black (negative) jumper cable when trying to jumpo start. And ... presuming that all is OK, I'd agree to either look at the cylinder work or the starter clutch (odds on favorite being the former). I agree , that darn gear can be a pain to get off. The one on my first engine came off somewhat easy but the one on the second engine is nearly impossible to get off ,lol. I honestly don't think its the issue either , but I'm just trying to cover every possibility.

Starter looks normal
Have a link to the piston/jug you bought? Who knows - maybe they sent you a BBK w/o you knowing.

Hey rcq , does his engine sound a little winy when it is turning over ? I understand it may just be the starter , but my started clutch made a noise like that also .

I went back and read what he said . he heard a tapping noise the day before. I wish I could find the video i posted that showed the noise my first started clutch was making while it was running. I'll look for it.

Here are some pics of the second one that went bad. The second one was an ncy starter clutch , but this one didn't show any signs of messing up until it started doing the same thing murkys is doing. It did make a weird wining type noise as I remember. Here is the thread. www.dansgaragetalk.com/topic/357-starter-issue/#comment-2690

Honestly the more I listen to it , the more it does not sound right.

I bought the top end rebuild kit off scrappy dogs This one --- right? If so, looks like a standard OEM piston, not oversized. So, a standard starter motor should be fine.

Hey rcq , I just realized you said thee gear behind the variator was harder to get back in ? You do know that gear just sets back in place and the variator is tightened down against it . it doesn't pop or snap back into place. The reason it is so hard " sometimes" to get back off is because it is in place for so long . its beveled on the inside of the gear and sets in place. Nothing to reinstalling it.

I've seen it pressed into the tadia engines, but I've seen then just tightened behind the variator and they go right into place. Its not like a bearing how they need pressed in. The crank shaft is beveled and the gear is beveled to fit right against it .
