The doctors from the Mass General Othopedics unit used to come to my shop to audition tools for the OR and it could be a bit unsettling as they auditioned them in surgical gloves with forensic blood on them to test for which grips worked the best when wet. Many times they were buying off the shelf tools that they would sterilize, use once and then throw away since it was cheaper than the special purpose surgical models. The really liked the Ryobie Cordless with the Lexan Plastic drilling guide since the depth stops were precise enough for relieving cranial pressure. Give you the Willies and Hebie Jeebies to see them go at it.

In my case they put me out as well, like in JR's case, they did it when I was in the operating room, but not before I was able to take a look at the "toolbox" WARNING!!!! Links not appropriate for the faint heartedI had two of these: linkAnd one like this: link

ricardo, I'm just going to make pretend your links are for 1) fudgesicle bars, and 2) Canadian bacon extra cheese thin crust pizza.
And I'll be sure to thank the surgicenter for putting my out before we got to the OR. I mean I seriously don't even remember going along any hallway or anything. I asked Mom if I was out before they took me, she couldn't remember for sure, said it happened really fast they came in and said it's time and there I went. Which I don't remember even that, so I was probably gone already. Thank you surgi-folks!

Actually horace, he did have his nurse call back with his instructions. So good enough in my book. They've been VERY good about all my calls with questions and concerns, and not once have they given even the slightest hint of irritation with me.
It's going to be better these next four days as Mom is back in the driver's seat. She's now out of the straitjacket (as she dubbed it) except when she sleeps. And that's only to keep her arm from ending up raised over her head. Although I stupidly drove her to hair this morn--habit already.
Ice, and now heat. Then ice going to bed. I hope it IS still healing and not messed up in there. Sigh.

Say ricardo, how's your healing coming along? >'Kat Doing fine, thanks for asking Just a bit of pain after walking too much or after the gym, my friend the PT is taking care of that, he says it is caused by the rod sitting inside the bone and because the ankle joint is a bit worn because of all the hammering required for removing and installing the rods . I will be back to normality (and hopefully be able to ride again) in a couple of weeks.

Whine time. My right foot seems to be aching worse each day lately. Tonight not even the hot foot spa thing didn't make it any happier. Nor the stronger prescription pill. Nor the ice pack for a while, although it's now been long enough to finally numb everything. Plus it was so itchy at bells and choir tonight that I wanted to scratch full nails 'til it bled. Shouldn't the itching be done by now? The incisions are pretty much healed looking, so what's making the itch? And why are the middle bones sore when he did nothing to those? And why is it still so very swollen in the middle? And why does it still feel fuzzy on the outside, but a tight band around the pinky toe? Why why why did I CHOOSE to have my foot cut open? Yes, I'm calling the dr first thing in the morn. I'm betting I get to have another visit with him, where he'll just confirm it's healing as it should and this is all normal. But you know, it's never normal when it's happening to your own foot. Sigh. I know, I know. I'm thankful I have a foot to ache and itch, instead of nothing like the guy Leo just told about. But this is my party and I'll whine if I want to. >'Kat, trying hard not to scratch

Swollen and pain can be a sign of an infection, you don't want that, better ask your Doc to take a look and check everything is ok.

Did that, ricardo. I called yest morn, they called back "Can you come in an hour?" He had three X-rays done of my right, they showed it's fine. So I didn't screw the screw walking so far in the hospital. He dismissed the itching, said there's zero rash so it's just healing. Use hydrocortisone and take a benadryl if the itching drives me crazy. (I know, short trip) The hurting, he said "You had surgery not long ago. It's still healing." Ditto with the tight band that my pinky toe feels like is squeezing it. He said nerves are the last things to heal, that's what's causing the various itchies and hurts and the squeezing band. I think he was most concerned about the swelling. I asked why the middle three hurt when he didn't do anything there, he said that's because it's still swollen. Then he looked at my foot again and pulled out a pad and wrote instructions for me. I am now to soak my feet, ice 5 min, warm 15-20, ice 5. And I got compression socks to wear. He also has delayed my return to work for two weeks , unless they'll allow me to sit half the time. I called the HR lady, I asked her to plead with them, PLEASE don't make me stay home any longer! She's not optimistic 'cause previous requests for sitting went unapproved, but she was going to try again for me. >'Kat

After this experience, I think I will never retire, I would go crazy being at home everyday!

After this experience, I think I will never retire, I would go crazy being at home everyday! I hear you on that, and second you loudly. Although I've got boatloads of activities outside work, those are all evening things. I know when I retire, I'll take a few weeks to do stuff--I'd like to travel once to Europe to see the museums and Pompeii and places and things I've only seen in photos and books. Then I'll go back to work, part-time. Even a few hours for a few days a week would do me fine. That's what's been so bad with this. I've been so restricted in my walking until this past Weds. Minimum trips on stairs. No more than 20% walking/standing of my pre-surgery usual. Couldn't even walk the length of my sanctuary, too far. Plus I can't really get down to my knees since I can't flex my feet. And I couldn't even arrange flute quartet songs 'cause I was forbidden piano-ing (I pedal too much). So I've had even less I can do than you had. I read Under the Dome, the Iron Tower (ripoff LotR) series, and Rin Tin Tin. Watched Rat Patrol, the blue lion set of Voltron, and the series where a family moved to a small town in France. Lots of regular tv. Sigh. I have been casually working on my white German Shepherd costume. But even that hasn't been easy since I need to put on the leggings to attach the foam, meaning hassling with these darn booties. I know. Cheese with my whine. At least I've been released from the crutches, and am starting more walking to get up to speed when I return to work...whenever that gets to be.... >'Kat
