Hi there, So I was recently given an old scooter by a friend. I'm pretty sure it is a Taotao ATM50A1 based on images I've compared it to online. Anyways my friend lost his keys to it so I need fix that issue before I can even begin to ride it. On top of that his seat is locked and I don't know how I'm gonna be able to get into the seat trunk without breaking something I might want to use in the future. Also the speedometer and odometer don't work either. I'm a complete novice when it comes to scooters and looking to get this thing into decent running shape so I can use to get to class and other places without having to ride my bike up and down hills at a snails pace all day. I figured this forum was a good starting location to learn about scooters so I can learn to repair them. I'm not unfairly with mechanics, I've done quite a bit of work on my car on my own and I'm hoping that carries over here for the most part. Anyways, nice to meet you all, hopefully you can give me some advice on the things that I've mentioned.
Thanks, Astray

Make sure you have a title. Otherwise you might be in possession of a stolen scoot.
We always asked to see the title of any scoot brought to us without keys. We, or I should say the Po-Po, recovered two stolen scoots that way.

The title is in the seat trunk of the scooter, but it is not stolen by me or my friend. He won it in a contest with a Textbook Store giveaway and has had it since. He gave it to me because he doesn't want to deal with bringing it with him to his new home a couple hours drive away and because he doesn't have any way of getting it to turn on and operate after losing his keys.

Don't keep the tittle with the vehicle. Someone could steal it from you, forge a signature and receive a new tittle in their name.

A good locksmith can impression a key . John And it's not that expensive, less so than replacing your locksets and much less hassle. For the rest of your issue's just take your time, do research so you don't have to do things twice or waste a bunch of $$ on parts that won't work for you. You can find the answers to most problems here.

The seat lock usually pulls a small cable that releases the latch. Sometimes you can reach up from underneath and feel around to find either the cable or latch. If the lock is on the side it's easier, if it's behind the seat you may have to break it (just drill the lock out and replace it they're cheap).
You can get new keyed ignitions cheap, just about all the trusted dealers with banners at the top of the page carry them.

Anyways my friend lost his keys to it so I need fix that issue before I can even begin to ride it. ==Before I noticed yours, I just started a similar thread last night. Today, I used a screwdriver to remove the gas cap. Not even a big one, about 3/8" shaft, but it has a square shaft so I could put an adjustable wrench on the shaft. I tried to twist only as much as needed, and it came off without damaging or even bending anything. ==It has stamped on it TT5002 which might be a code a locksmith can use. What numbers are on your cap? Or others who are reading? TT might stand for TaoTao and maybe the keys are sold to the locksmith already cut?? I will take the cap with me so I will know if the key fits before I leave the store. If it fits the cap, hopefully it will fit the ignition and seat. There is one really big locksmith here and I will start with him, but he's not open on Sundays. ==But I also saw nimajneb's post and that's a really good idea, too. On top of that his seat is locked and I don't know how I'm gonna be able to get into the seat trunk without breaking something I might want to use in the future. Also the speedometer and odometer don't work either. ==How do you know?
