Thanks you guys.
Tortoise, I'm not sure yet how the bowl is fastened on. I have feeler gauges.
Bob, I think the previous owner got water in the fuel. Is that related to ethanol in the fuel? It was very cloudy, like tan skim milk iirc.
And I didn't have any place to dispose of it, so it's been sitting all winter in a 2 liter plastic pepsi bottle. Last fall after three days it separated so the top 2/3rds was clear tan, and the bottom was very cloudy. Do you think the top part is useful for anything?

Thanks, Tortoise, that explains it well. Very interesting.
But now another question has raised its head. The carburetor I was about to buy says 40" from air box and 28 to the manifold. Since everything else looks the same, can I assume those are same dimensions I have, or do they vary and I should take my carb out partially to actually measure it?
I guess that's obvious now, but I'm a little slow, and I thought they were all the same.

Hi, I posted last fall about this scooter, and I got it running for as much as 40 seconds, but no longer. Then it got cold. Spring is here and it's time to work more on this TaoTao 49/50cc scooter made in China. The gas was pretty crummy, so I drained the tank and the gas hose and tried to run the clean gas through the carb, but it took starter fluid spray to get it to run. I just don't have time to take the carb apart to clean it so either 1) there's a way to clean it without that??? or 2) I'll buy a new one. Matching ones range from $18 to a little over $50. Do you think price makes a difference or are all really the same thing? I once saw a particular model of digital camera for sale online for prices between 50 and 200 dollars, the very same thing. If a difference in quality, where would low quality show itself? The only difference apparent from the photos is that the diaphragm cover on mine and some others is metal and the one on still others is black, maybe metal, maybe plastic, but it's not a part that gets hot. Even plastic should be fine. When I fear some won't match, I still think they'll screw in place, but maybe the opening to the intake manifold will be a different diameter, or other ports will be different. All of these are rated 4 stars or more. It's the 50 dollar one I wonder about especially and the difference if any between that black cover and the metal cover. ? I'm still pretty heavy, will a larger port make the scooter run faster for me? This is only 18 and in the US: www.buyatvpartsonline.com/carburetor-09-chinese-gy6-50cc-scooters-pd18j-p-11308.htmlThe one is in China but I'm certain it matches, because it has so many pictures that match: www.amazon.com/50cc-18mm-Carburetor-49cc-Scooter/dp/B004J5CJVA?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_1&smid=A1HW0E1TRCDRAJThis one is $51 and in the US, KEIHIN brand?: www.amazon.com/dp/B01304EI78?psc=1This is $22 + 4 shipping, in the US and claim "jet upgrades Scooter Moped ATV" Upgraded jets for better starting, idling and performance. main, 32 pilot jet. In a thread from years ago, Braveheart wrote "Kkza, I have a Keihin clone 18mm with about 900 mile on it. No problems. I just upgraded to a 20mm. This shoud fit if you have a 139QMB 50cc engine. Read more: scootdawg.proboards.com/thread/36128/carburettor#ixzz48azt8wr3 " 18 and 20 mm are the carburetor output openings, right, to the intake manifold? If not that, what? How is it possible to change the carburetor to a different size? Won't it be too loose for the manifold? I'm confused. I thought mine was 40mm intake and 28mm output, on a 50cc TaoTao. thanks.

Welcome to the forums, and kudos for helping get this project running!
>> Thanks <<
1) the vin is usually located on the main front frame member, there is often a rectangular piece in the body panel that can be removed to show it.
>> I found it! I thought I would have to unscrew a whole panel but it was little rectangle like you said. But it has no plates and I suspect it's never been registered. I will call the police again on Monday <<
2) It may start and run without a battery if it's an AC system.
>> Air-Cooled? That it is. <<
3) A standard lead acid battery will do fine, at least 7cca
>> I want it to run before I spend money on the battery, but I have old-UPS batteries and a charger that should be enough to test the lights, etc. <<
4) Do not attempt to drill the gas cap lock, sparks and gas don't play nice!!! If a screwdriver jammed into it won't turn it, take it to a locksmith for safety (empty tank is not safe, fumes ignite, not fuel)
>> Hard to take it because it won't fit in my car and I probably can't lift it either! But I got it out in a few seconds with a small square-shaft screwdriver and an adjustable wrench. I used as little force as possible and I don't think I broke or bent anything. The number stamped on the cap is TT5002. I wonder if that represents the key and if he'll already have keys with that number. <<
5) The emergency kill switch is on the right handlebar, it's usually a red switch that slides
>> You're right, of course. It is red which makes sense, and the symbols, which can be hard to understand, match the symbols in the manual for that switch.
6) The brake does have to be pulled while starting, it completes the starter circuit (some models have a side-stand kill switch, only allowing it to start when up).
>> I forgot you said that. There seems to be gas in the tank, though I have to check again with a better light and a better stick. But again it wouldn't start. I went looking for the spark plug wire and I thought I found more damage that the thieves had done. Instead I found the mirror stuffed, or fallen, under the seat area. Both mirrors are broken off, the rear box is broken off, the seat and its box are broken off (but they are still there), two body panels are missing, the battery is missing, and the tail light lens is missing. The last thing might precede being stolen. The driver has fallen over a couple times.
>> Do I have to hold the left brake, the right one, or both?
Hold the brake lever in and either press the starter button, or kick the kickstarter.
You'll need to flush the fuel system, and take apart the carb and clean it.
>> Okay <<
Let us know how it goes.
>> Okay <<

Hi there, So I was recently given an old scooter by a friend. I'm pretty sure it is a Taotao ATM50A1 based on images I've compared it to online. Anyways my friend lost his keys to it so I need fix that issue before I can even begin to ride it. ==Before I noticed yours, I just started a similar thread last night. Today, I used a screwdriver to remove the gas cap. Not even a big one, about 3/8" shaft, but it has a square shaft so I could put an adjustable wrench on the shaft. I tried to twist only as much as needed, and it came off without damaging or even bending anything. ==It has stamped on it TT5002 which might be a code a locksmith can use. What numbers are on your cap? Or others who are reading? TT might stand for TaoTao and maybe the keys are sold to the locksmith already cut?? I will take the cap with me so I will know if the key fits before I leave the store. If it fits the cap, hopefully it will fit the ignition and seat. There is one really big locksmith here and I will start with him, but he's not open on Sundays. ==But I also saw nimajneb's post and that's a really good idea, too. On top of that his seat is locked and I don't know how I'm gonna be able to get into the seat trunk without breaking something I might want to use in the future. Also the speedometer and odometer don't work either. ==How do you know?

A neighbor kid found a scooter, a mini-bike, in the woods. He called the police to report it, and a patrol car came out soon after, but the cop said that since it didn't have a VIN, they weren't really interested, implied he could have it, and left without it. I offered to help him fix it up. (It's missing some parts and others are broken) I found manuals and downloaded them. I hope you can help us.
It's a Taotao ATM50, blue.
1) Does the bike have a VIN? None of us could find it, including the cop.
2) Will it start and run without a battery?
3) Do I want a lead acid or a sealed lead acid battery? The latter is a gel, right, and that doesn't have enough output?
4) No key for the gas cap. Do you think I can pick the gas cap lock or get it out somehow without a drill?
5) Where is the emergency Engine Stop switch?
6) The instructions say to keep one's hand on the brake when starting it. Is that only because something not standard might make the engine race, which would put it in gear?
Thanks a lot for any help you can give us.
I meant to call myself MickATM50, but used 10 instead and now I can't change it!
