Hi everyone. So today I just purchased a used Roma 150cc scooter with 1200 miles on it, and I was driving it home the hour drive when suddenly the accelerator stopped working. The scooter idled for a few seconds before it finally just stalled and rolled to a stop . Tried restarting it, and it just cranks but won't start. Then gas begins flowing out of what I think is the overflow for the carburetor. Anyone have this issue or know how to fix it? Thanks

As for the problem, sounds like a carburetor problem. If you have experience with them, I would recommend cleaning it very throughly, clean the jets, and ensure the floats are properly adjusted.
If you are not, you could purchase a new one. With 1200 miles on the scoot, you may still have a restricted carb where access is limited.

Thank you! And I'm not too experienced with carburetors or working on motorcycles/scooters. What do you mean by restricted carb? Is there one that would be less restricted that I should get for it?

Some stock carburetors restrict an owner from opening it to change the jets or adjust the air:fuel ratio. You will see just a brass cap. It's possible to remove the caps, but much easier to just purchase an aftermarket carburator.

Sweet doesn't look to hard to get it out then just throw a new one in and I'm good to I'm guessing. Any brand of aftermarket I should look for? Want it to be as reliable as possible since it's my girls main transportation for now. If theres anything else you'd recommend that'd be great seems like you know your stuff pretty good

We have several trusted vendors that are advertised on the main page. I would stick with those.
Scrappydogscooters.com, and nycscooterparts.com, are two good sources.
If you are just worried about transportation, don't worry about "performance" parts.

Also, what engine type so you have? On the bottom left of the engine should be a stamp, maybe 157qmj for a 150cc.

Be careful getting a new carb. I got one online and the main jet was WAY to small for my scoot. Just something to look at.

Id open up and check the carb first...no point in getting a new one if you dont need it. probably cleaning it would do, other than the diaphragm and auto choke theres very little that can actually break. Also if the a/f screw is plugged upits like a 30 second job to get it off if you have a power drill. It wouldnt hurt to have a new one and a spare old one, but your old carb probably just needs to be cleaned

Thanks Sounds to me like the needle valve stopped doing its job and is now stuck open . Your needle valve closes off the flow of gas when the bowl is full. If it doesn't close properly , fuel will flood the carb and the scoot will stop running.

JoeyBee Okay cool thanks for all the help. I know the engine is the gy6 I'll check the stqmp in little bit when I go out. jtron If its relatively easy to just clean out I'll do that, just need it working asap. geh3333 I did read something about the needle getting stuck and causing this issue, but the fix that was posted didnt work for me. The guy said turn off the fuel (couldnt figure out how so i skipped that) then hit the carb with back of a screwdriver lightly while trying to start it, with the idea that whatever was blocking it would come loose. Unfortunetly that didn't work out for me

UPDATE. Picked up a new carb at a shop, and as I was walking out the guy asked what happened. I told him the story, and he showed my the end of the hose on a different bike with the same carb. It had a screw plugging the overflow hole. I went home with the new carb to check it out. No screw in the hole, but I could see it was threaded for one. So I took the new screw out of the new carbs overflow and screwed it into the one on my scoot. Perfect fit. Tried to start. Nothing. Tried again started right up. So I guess that's fixed, and I have a new carb if I need one.
However, now it won't stay running at idle if I don't always give it a little gas. Any ideas whats going on with that? I know on my 250 4 stroke dirtbike I could adjust the idle, but I didn't see that on this.

Where the throttle cable attaches right above that is a screw which can speed up or slow down your idle. Along on the side there is am air fuel mixture screw. Google gy6 carb diagram and itll show what is what. You may just need to turn the idle speed screw in a bit. There's some fairly detailed directions on how to properly tune the air fuel mixture you could Google...I'll try and find a link for you
