Alright, I have some results from my oil temp dipstick. 150cc air cooled scooter.
Riding near midnight to work and work to home in the early morning, 3.8 miles, has a consistent reading of 50-60 (122-140 F) degrees Celsius.
Riding from work to home in the hot afternoon, 3.8 miles, has a reading of 60-70 (140-158) degrees Celsius. These figures are only from 2 seperate occasions.
I hope this helps. I tested the dipstick when I got with hot water and it was fairly accurate. And I live in south Texas. Nights are in the mid 80s, afternoon high 90s to 100s

I also hope you took the time to read the article I linked, back in reply #7. It will make clear why I say frequent oil changes are a must, for you, and anyone else who does mostly short trip driving.

Once I hit 1,000, I planned on changing every 1,000 chinomiles. The next is coming up every shortly. I've been using Rotella 10-30, but I'm thinking about switching to full synthetic.

I've been using dollar store oil in both of my scooters. Two years on the 50cc, and 6 months on the 150cc. No issues, and I've saved about $50!

1,000 miles is not often enough.....at least it wouldn't be for my equipment. Check your owners manual.....mine recommends 650 miles, (which is just a tad over 1000 kilometers), BUT, then states more frequent changes should be done if.......most operation is done in dusty conditions, cold weather, short trips, etc, etc.
I don't do short trips, and mine gets done every 600 miles....that figures out to about 5 times a season (Apr to Nov). Total cost (all 5 changes) $12.47 plus tax. Pretty cheap insurance.

hillbillybob ... Thanks for the advice. I'll take it into consideration. Maybe I'll switch to every 500 chinomiles. The little bit of hassle and cash is worth the insurance of a well running engine. Especially according to the article you quoted I don't ride enough to evaporate the moisture produced. What's your opinion of changing gear oil? Since the initial oil change I have also changed the gear oil with the engine oil.

I believe most manuals recommend about a 2,000 mile interval. If I could ride year round, I would probably follow the manual's advice, but since I can't, I change it twice a year.....when put up for the winter, and about midway through the riding season. In fact I just did it 2 weeks ago....it was 20 miles shy of 1500 since last done. Cost me all of 68 cents to do it, using Valvoline High Performance 80W/ . As a side note, I do run magnetic drain plugs too.

Royal purple max cycle 10w40 . I still change mine between 300-800 miles. I average 6,000 miles a year. I have a little over 20,000 miles on my scoot.
