FINALLY! My new scooter is registered and no longer has a naked fanny. One thing that surprised me, they charged me local sales tax, even though it was purchased from a different state. Think I may call the Dept of Taxation on Tuesday and argue with them a bit. $1404 x 8.1% = $113.72 in taxes that I don't believe should be collected by the local tax dept, since it wasn't purchased in state. They went over every detail of the paperwork with a fine tooth comb, everything checked out perfectly. One thing I always recommend, do not fill out the rear of the MCO until you are at the DMV, and let them tell you exactly what to fill out. One mistake can lead to headaches and extra fees and a longer waiting time to get your ride registered. Now that that's all done, I'm riding the rest of the weekend! Many States require you to declare your Out of State purchases and pay up at the end of the year anyway. You live in that State and bought it to use in that State and it was delivered to you In-State so you pay the tax. Otherwise they will just have to come up with a different way to generate the revenue which could end up being bringing the bike in annually to have the odometer checked for tampering and read with a per mile fee then charged with of course additional charges for the inspection and reading. Better off leaving well enough alone as the alternatives will usually end up costing us more.

Here the dealer takes care of registration, but I have to pay almost $200 every year on taxes for a $1000 scoot + %60 on taxes on the fuel price!!

I just went to a 3rd party DMV company to change the title over and transfer plates on the scooter I just picked up. No lines, no waiting, no BS. They got me right in, changed the title, gave me a tag and away I went. They charge a $15 or $20 convenience fee but it's well worth not having to deal with the state.

When I lived in Massachusetts I had a really great insurance agent who would take care of the DMV for you as part of his service. He was so well known at the DMV that there was rarely a problem that he couldn't resolve on the spot or with a five minute phone call. Half the officials would be meeting at his house for poker night every Wednesday which didn't hurt either along with the fact that he was 100% honest and upright.
