So was riding to work when the bike slowed and felt a few little jumps, then if I rev the motor a bit high the scooter would move very slow but just a little, then another little jump and it stopped moving altogether. smells like burnt rubber, could it be the the belt giving out?
I am at work and haven't yet had a chance to open the case.
it is a Chinese 50cc scoot with 5000 miles on it, I have taken very good care of it (changing oil regularly, cleaning carb, valve adjustments, etc...) I just have not gone into the drive stuff in much detail I don't know too much about clutches or drive assembly.
if it is just a belt, are they easy to replace? the bike is sitting at a gas station, can it be done in the parking lot kind of repair? :-) I don't have a truck to move the thing easily so hoping to fix it o the spot.
What tools am I gonna need?
Also could the clutch have failed? for about 2 weeks I felt a bit of a jump when I would go from a stop.

Could be the belt, or the weights fell out, or the clutch pads or their springs failed. Only way to know for sure is to take off the CVT cover and inspect the belt, variator assembly, and clutch assembly.

Yes it can be all fixed at the gas station but you will need a 17mm socket to take the variator off and put on a new belt. And the jumping could be a bad belt and or bad weights and or bad or glazed clutch pads. Also the3 high rev and hardly no movement could be oil has gotten into the cvt and the belt is slipping and or your oil crankseal is leaking. But you will see the problem right away once you take the CVT cover off. If you still not sure take some pictures of the CVT before you take anything off and we will be able to tell you what the problem is. Alleyoop

Thanks alleyoop I am going to have my wife bring a bunch of tools to me later, hopefully the scooter shop will be open, the guy seems a bit flaky and just closes when he likes sometimes. :-(

OK the belt was destroyed in a spectacular fashion, so cleaned it up, got a new belt and variator fan, the plastic blades on the other were all ripped off. The rollers had flat spots on them but I put them back in place.
Got it all back together but now there is a pretty heavy rumble feeling at low speed, might it be the rollers being out of whack? Or new belt need to be broken in? Not sure exactly what to check.

Plastic blades? Really? If it's vibrating badly I'd open it up again and make sure the outer face of the variator is properly seated and snugged down.

Yeah plastic, although I am not sure that is a bad thing, not sure what damage would occur if the belt got jammed up in a metal one, might have caused damage elsewhere.
Anyway I am gonna take it apart this evening, going to put in new rollers, and will recheck all the seating etc...
the feeling I get when accelerating really feels like something out of balance, kinda feels like the back wheel is wobbling, but pretty darn sure that is not the case, since the only difference is the change of belt. but like I said when I removed the variator the rollers all have flat spots and they are very likely not placed back in the same order as removed, or rolled into the same positions.
Anything else that can cause an off balance wobble under that CVT?

You could have some debris from the shredded belt inside the clutch bell, causing the pads to slip-n-grip till there is enough pressure to hold them firm. It also could be the new belt wearing in to the drive face, you get a bit of vibration with new belts till they wears in, but not much. It also could be the worn roller weights. I would recommend replacing them, and consider slider weights, they give a slightly smoother acceleration curve.
Which scooter shop are you going to? For parts, we are lucky to have Scrappy Dog Scooters here in Vegas, so you can get good prices with a quick drive to their store.

I am way down by Eastern and Horizon Ridge, so Scrappy is pretty far, I got the scoot from Best Buy but don't think I want to go back there, that dude is very Schmarmy. Went to Pacific Wholesale yesterday, they seemed cool.
I just need to figure what rollers or sliders I need to get, according to the bestbuyscooter site the scooter I have is MC-08KC-50. Do I need to open the clutch assembly like remove the the heavy spring etc too? or remove the bell and clean all the surfaces? is there any cleaner that is safe to use as well? I will borrow the neighbor's impact wrench again and clean everything up and replace rollers this evening

Just remove the bell and if there is any rubber melted on or the pads look glazed, buff them with some sandpaper. Check the weights you currently have, when going to sliders you generally go 1 up in weight. You can weigh them at any postal/package store.
I used to live off of College and Horizon, now I live on the edge of Summerlin, yeah Scrappy's is a way off from you. There is A2Z Motorsports across town from you off of Rainbow, closest shop I'm familiar with to you, and they have never ripped myself or my nephew off in the two years I've done business with them.

Took it all apart this weekend, cleaned everything out, sanded clutch pads a little to remove glaze, installed new 6g sliders
The result so far: I still have the rumble feeling on acceleration up to 15 or 20 mph, not sure if this is just the new belt or what, but everything else seemed to to be in place and aligned Cover went back nice.
with the new sliders I have a noticeable increase in top end about 5mph increase which is nice, acceleration speed seems fairly normal(aside from the rumble feeling)
I do have a small ring sound(like a bell) when the starter disengages the large gear on the outer part of the variator, maybe the starter took a small hit from the belt breaking? seems to start ok though
