OMG! Best scooter story ever! I'm on my way to get a $20 wrench now and a time machine(back to pre-augmented times)
Best ad ever for harbor freight too.

Looks like a nice tool, but my variator has no holes in it, so unless it can hold on to the little starter teeth I could only remove the clutch.

OK that is awesome, I gotta have it! :-)
So I got the scoot home via a friends truck, installed a new clutch and a higher quality belt and holy crap things are smooooth, pickup is way better, got another 5mph just from the lack of slipping from the clutch, the new belt is a properly made Gates belt not the no name belt that Best Buy scooters sold me for $25(like $15 more than that frayed out of the bag piece of crud would cost anywhere else)
I will never return to Best Buy scooters, Scrappy dawg is too far for me, but Pacific Wholesale Scooters are pretty dang good too, quite a bit more respectful bunch as well, and always have what I need at a decent price, although I think scrappy has better prices on everything. Gonna swing by Harbor Freight tonight to see if they have that kit, although I hate to take up what little storage space I have, gonna need a spare belt too but I think this one is proper and should last :-)
Thanks for tip :-)

LOL, well back when I originally could not get the nut off I did end up getting an air compressor and wrench from Harbor Freight which worked great, but now I had my wife bring it to me filled with air(since I was stranded kinda) and it was not enough air to get it off :-(
So maybe I will swing by Harbor Freight to get an electric one, otherwise I have to walk the bike at least two miles to a gas station that is cool enough to let me use power. :-)

Well I broke another belt today, the old one had only about 700 miles on it. strangely the issues I had with the rumble feeling and all had smoothed out after I broke in the old belt, however the old clutch I think was slipping quite a bit, and I think I may have had a very small warping on one of the clutch drive plates. Also turns out the mileage is in fact listed in miles so I am now at 5500 miles on that clutch, but I think I damaged it when trying to remove the variator the first time(wedging a hammer between the clutch plates and the starter gear to try and turn the nut)
Sooo, haven't opened it but I am sure I am in for the same issue of broken belt, this time I am going to replace the clutch and belt, will check the variator plates for any rough spots etc, also my closest scooter parts place sells me overpriced no name parts so that was probably also a factor. Gonna try to get to a trusted shop today.

I think the bike is in km so 5000km or like 3100mi km is on the top of the speedometer so likely eh? :-)

yeah those went back in nicely, I am thinking something must be bent, gonna take another look at the pulley surfaces etc see if anything it dented or bent,
I am having a of a time getting the thing started the last couple days now :-(

Took it all apart this weekend, cleaned everything out, sanded clutch pads a little to remove glaze, installed new 6g sliders
The result so far: I still have the rumble feeling on acceleration up to 15 or 20 mph, not sure if this is just the new belt or what, but everything else seemed to to be in place and aligned Cover went back nice.
with the new sliders I have a noticeable increase in top end about 5mph increase which is nice, acceleration speed seems fairly normal(aside from the rumble feeling)
I do have a small ring sound(like a bell) when the starter disengages the large gear on the outer part of the variator, maybe the starter took a small hit from the belt breaking? seems to start ok though

I am way down by Eastern and Horizon Ridge, so Scrappy is pretty far, I got the scoot from Best Buy but don't think I want to go back there, that dude is very Schmarmy. Went to Pacific Wholesale yesterday, they seemed cool.
I just need to figure what rollers or sliders I need to get, according to the bestbuyscooter site the scooter I have is MC-08KC-50. Do I need to open the clutch assembly like remove the the heavy spring etc too? or remove the bell and clean all the surfaces? is there any cleaner that is safe to use as well? I will borrow the neighbor's impact wrench again and clean everything up and replace rollers this evening

Yeah plastic, although I am not sure that is a bad thing, not sure what damage would occur if the belt got jammed up in a metal one, might have caused damage elsewhere.
Anyway I am gonna take it apart this evening, going to put in new rollers, and will recheck all the seating etc...
the feeling I get when accelerating really feels like something out of balance, kinda feels like the back wheel is wobbling, but pretty darn sure that is not the case, since the only difference is the change of belt. but like I said when I removed the variator the rollers all have flat spots and they are very likely not placed back in the same order as removed, or rolled into the same positions.
Anything else that can cause an off balance wobble under that CVT?

OK the belt was destroyed in a spectacular fashion, so cleaned it up, got a new belt and variator fan, the plastic blades on the other were all ripped off. The rollers had flat spots on them but I put them back in place.
Got it all back together but now there is a pretty heavy rumble feeling at low speed, might it be the rollers being out of whack? Or new belt need to be broken in? Not sure exactly what to check.

Thanks alleyoop I am going to have my wife bring a bunch of tools to me later, hopefully the scooter shop will be open, the guy seems a bit flaky and just closes when he likes sometimes. :-(

So was riding to work when the bike slowed and felt a few little jumps, then if I rev the motor a bit high the scooter would move very slow but just a little, then another little jump and it stopped moving altogether. smells like burnt rubber, could it be the the belt giving out?
I am at work and haven't yet had a chance to open the case.
it is a Chinese 50cc scoot with 5000 miles on it, I have taken very good care of it (changing oil regularly, cleaning carb, valve adjustments, etc...) I just have not gone into the drive stuff in much detail I don't know too much about clutches or drive assembly.
if it is just a belt, are they easy to replace? the bike is sitting at a gas station, can it be done in the parking lot kind of repair? :-) I don't have a truck to move the thing easily so hoping to fix it o the spot.
What tools am I gonna need?
Also could the clutch have failed? for about 2 weeks I felt a bit of a jump when I would go from a stop.

I did see that post about the spacers, I think he said he just greased things up and it was gone.
So here is an update, the original clunk sound is back really, but somehow the rear brake when I pull it sometimes can make the same sound, it is almost like a clunk but if you listen close sounds like it rings for a very short moment after the sound, almost like a spring being plucked.
so for checking the bearings how much play if any should I feel, it I try to wiggle the wheel up and down it seems there is no play. If I push/pull on the wheel following the axle (or side to side like I am going to pull a steering wheel off of a car) there is a real small amount of play. if I wobble the wheel by just grabbing the back and pulling that side to side it does not seem to have really any play.
I looked at the brakes and they seem to be ok, could it be the drum is out of round and is pulling one of the pads off the little post a bit and then it bounces back, making a clunk with a very short spring sound. I never hear the sound when I am actually braking, only sometimes when I first pull the handle.
Other than that the sound happens(best I can hear) only when rolling real slow with weight on the bike.
The scoot has 3500 miles on it, I forgot to add.
