I have a 50cc Roketa scooter that is now making a weird clunking sound in the rear wheel, if it is rolling real slow with my weight on it(engine off or on), it is kind of a clunk with a crackle sound that kind of goes with it.
I took the rear wheel off checked the drum brakes, the only thing strange was it seemed the bolt holding the wheel on was pretty easy to loosen, other than that I did not find anything in the brake or drum area out of the ordinary. So I scuffed the brakes up a bit(to get rid of some squealing I had) put the wheel back on and tightened it up proper. rolled it real slow again with my weight on it and the clunking seemed to be gone. so I attributed it to maybe a loose nut?(and it was tight just didn't take much effort to get it loose, not like I could have loosened by hand or anything)
Anyway rode it to work today and now I get a crack/clunk noise a gain but now when I pull the rear brake handle(this first time after riding a few lights down the road) If I pull it several times in a row after I stop it does not click. but also the click happens when I accelerate at first as well. might this be a problem in the clutch or gearbox? Not sure what I should check for next.

Could be a bad wheel bearing since it was loose before or it could also be a bearing in the tranny. Put it on the center stand and see if you can move the wheel sideways looking for play. The if it nice and solid then turn it by hand slow and see if you can feel any binding or noise. Alleyoop

Yeah and when you pull the brake in it tightens up because the shoes are snug against the drum holding the whole assembly together..I bet its the bearings too Alley

Didn't someone just have a problem like this and it turned out to be the spacers between the bearings and the wheel and nut where mixed up ?

I did see that post about the spacers, I think he said he just greased things up and it was gone.
So here is an update, the original clunk sound is back really, but somehow the rear brake when I pull it sometimes can make the same sound, it is almost like a clunk but if you listen close sounds like it rings for a very short moment after the sound, almost like a spring being plucked.
so for checking the bearings how much play if any should I feel, it I try to wiggle the wheel up and down it seems there is no play. If I push/pull on the wheel following the axle (or side to side like I am going to pull a steering wheel off of a car) there is a real small amount of play. if I wobble the wheel by just grabbing the back and pulling that side to side it does not seem to have really any play.
I looked at the brakes and they seem to be ok, could it be the drum is out of round and is pulling one of the pads off the little post a bit and then it bounces back, making a clunk with a very short spring sound. I never hear the sound when I am actually braking, only sometimes when I first pull the handle.
Other than that the sound happens(best I can hear) only when rolling real slow with weight on the bike.
The scoot has 3500 miles on it, I forgot to add.

He had to switch the spacers back to where they should be , having them switched would cause stress on the bearings . The inner spacer is about 2 - 3 times longer then the outside one .

Thats true,,he would have noticed it long ago...the wheel bearings are rather easy to get at,,I would just remove the wheel then check the bearings with my fingers,,pretty sure its a cheap fix

Yeh I actually bought a new chrome swing arm instead of buying the bearings . But the bearings alone are pretty cheap .

Actually my exhaust cracked one of the welds on the new swing arm so I'll probably be swapping about the bearings soon .
